Audio Recording Issues! (T43)

#1 Post by ewthompson » Wed Jun 29, 2005 5:03 pm

OK I am doing some audio editing/tracking on my 2687DRU. I am taking audio from CD's and from an external mic (line in). Typically with the default audio setup, if you have a CD running and open SoundRecorder, you can snatch wav data right off the CD in live time. My thinkpad is refusing to capture any signal through SoundRecorder, whether CD or through my line in. I've check and double checked my audio configuration, and all ports are activated. Any ideas? Anyone experiencing similar problems?

Are you changing the RECORDING volume controls? e.g. Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Advanced (in Device Volume) > Options > Properties.

Yes, I have the mic level near the max, and have activated mic boost. Additionally the CD level is near the max. I'm wondering if it is an issue with the sound card itself...

Works fine on my officemate's T43. Which recording device(s) do you have selected? Also, for the CDs, consider using CDex.

If your master is a CD, why not just digitally rip the cd, instead of trying to capture it thru the soundcard?

Which is what CDex does...

My bad, it sounded like it was being run thru the soundcard and then converted (I'm not familiar with CDex).

Because that would lead to extra editing...I just snatch the section I need, then pare it down further in my sound editor. But as a last ditch option, I recognize I can indeed take the whole track. Thanks.

Extra editing? I don't think so. It's the same amount of editing whether you capture a snippet, a song, or a side.

As things are, you're doing all this extra work just to get an inferior analog capture, when with digital there'd be no wiring to do and no sound card to worry about.

I need to capture the wav form, as I'm chopping up my selected sounds visually. There's no extra work involved whatsoever. Granted I could import the entire track into my audio editor workspace and then chop it up and delete the massive unneeded sections, however with that large of a sample to work with I'd have no idea where I am in the song. So playing the song in real time is a necessity. When I come across the area I'm interested in, it is captured with sound recorder and saved as a wav file for editing later on in the session. It in fact takes much less time capturing the small pocket of data I need in real time utilizing FF,REW, etc, than importing the whole thing and chopping it down after that through essentially the same process. I'm OK with the quality loss for now.

Any suggestions?
