yet another, t series battery life question

#1 Post by eigh » Thu Jun 30, 2005 1:11 am

ok im so close to making the decision between an x4x and a t4x, the one thing im still deciding on is battery life.

i know the x41 tablet can get up to about 8 hours on an 8 cell and settings tuned down. whats the max battery life on a t4x (most likely a t43)?

T43 is quoted at 4 hours with 6 cell or 7.5 hours with 9 cell.

However, remember during normal usage you won't get as long as this.

The only other thing about the T series if battery life is so important is that you can also add a second battery in place of the ultrabay when required which will give you even longer.

If this is going to be your main computer IMHO get a T series, if its only used when out and about and you want something small get an X series and if you use it in meetings / lectures and like the idea of natural writing get the tablet.

my t43 2687dru gets more like 6 hours off the 9 cell, closer to 5 with constant fairly heavy use.
T43: 2GB, 160GB,1.86GHz. Wanted: T400s or X301, maxed out. Or do I want a new T410? Opinions welcome.

I got close to 7.0-8.0 hrs workable with both the slim polymer & 9 cell on my T42. I'm sure I could get 9 if I just let it sit. It drops noticably over time though. Right now I think I can get 5.5-6 off both while working on it and not just letting it sit.

This last Sat. I used my T43p for a total of 5.5 hours with WiFi turned on and still had 27% indicated left. I am not dissapointed in the 9cell battery and would own no other.

the thinkpad would not be my primary computer, i have an athlon 2400 (2ghz) with plenty of hd space and 1.5gb ram (an old radeon 9500 though).

if i did get the t43 it would probobly be better than my desktop, but if thats the case i would use it for everything as opossed to only using it for school work like i had planned for it.

idk :(, the comp guy in me wants super t43, but i planned on this thinkpad being a school machine (so i dont need a video card).

is that 7.5 hours from the 9 cell in addition to the ultra bay battery? or without it?

and of course, i must assume they dropped the clock down and screen brightness to get 7.5 hours right (and the 9 cell hangs out the back a little)?

The 7.5 hours is without it - as others have mentioned these are just battery benchmarks used to compare with other notebooks in general use I would expect about 6 hours with brightness turned down/bluetooth turned off etc.

However, add the ultrabay battery and you would most likely get your 8+ hours for a full days work.

The 9 cell battery does hang out the back and I don't like them because of it - i would rather have a couple of 6 cell batteries with external battery charger and keep the T4* the shape it should be.

I wasn't such a fan at first of the 9 cell because it hangs out the back, but i started to use it as a handle and it works very nicely. I grab the thinkpad out of my bag by the battery and then hold it from underneath, this way, i don't have to touch the lid so much since it is prone to ugly fingerprints. Based on the shape of the battery, the IBM designers obviously meant for this to be a secondary use of the battery.

I agree. I use it as a handle, and also use the battery for leverage while opening to prevent my oily fingerprints from depositing on the nice top finish. :D
