ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication
Have anyone tried lubricating the fan of a T43 that makes those rattling noise before? I was originally going to replace two fans of mine that was quite noisy but then I thought it is a lost cause anyways so I popped the copper part out of the fan with two screw drivers, and then turns out the fan blade is attached to the coil body by magnet!
Turns out dabbing two drops of olive oil inside the axle hole fixed the problem for both of my fan assemblies and it runs quieter than ever, and with the smell of olive oil coming out of the heatsink every time the computer turns on

Re: ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication
Well I like the olive oil scent
However, this is very temporary. The problem lies in the fan construction itself - the pin that rotates with the fins is a bit too long. Drilling a small hole exactly in the middle makes the pin move into the hole, and the tractor sound is gone forever.
Add in vaseline oil in spray and it's just as quiet as it can get.

Re: ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication
Are you talking about the same source of problem as I am? I am talking about the friction sound that shows up as a sign of prolonged use of a fan (like what happens to the case/CPU fans of a desktop computer as well) that didn't appear until like recent 2 weeks or so. Now it is pretty quiet, but I also need to wait till the Thermal Grizzly thermal paste cures as now the temps seemed not as good as before...

Nope, I did not get you right then. I meant the classic sound of this cooling system on the first two stages of M24 fan unit.

Install an M10 and call it a day...that's what I've been doing for years on all of my ATi-based T43/p machines...

Re: ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication
Well the point is to fix the problem without spending a cent (well I technically did spent a cent worth of olive oil but still). I could've bought another fan assembly as a whole and spend like $20, but then there will still come a time where I will need that lubrication again as all bearings will at one point.

Fair enough.
I guess that I'm just tired of tweaking stuff and want it to work OOTB. But that's me.

Re: ThinkPad T43 fan lubrication
But isn't it better to drop oil inside so that the bearings won't wear out as fast (unless your fan is brand new)?
Also even if you don't have the annoying grinding noise, lubricating it lowers the noise either way (and I don't even remember how these fans sound when they were brand new until now)
