T43p Bluetooth IV - Experience and Questions

#1 Post by JWadle » Fri Jul 01, 2005 4:15 pm

I am using a new T43p with "Bluetooth IV" (i.e. Widcomm BTW v3.1.1.915 download from IBM). I have a fair amount of experience with Bluetooth, but I'd like to start some discussion about this new BT hardware/software since it is seems somewhat different from the "Bluetooth II" in my previous T40.

Here's what I have going so far:

>Paired to Sony-Ericsson T630 phone for syncing to Outlook 2003 via BT using XTNDConnect PC. This works nearly all the time with occasional hiccups.

>Paired directly to Logitech diNovo BT Media Desktop (Mx900 mouse, diNovo Keyboard and MediaPad). The mouse works always, the keyboard most of the time, and the Mediapad only sometimes (by "works" I mean pairs and functions automatically on startup). The keyboard and mouse even work during startup, i.e. for BIOS setup, Safe Mode, etc.). By "paired directly" I mean I am not using the Logitech USB BT hub that comes with the diNovo Desktop.

This initial version of the Logitech diNovo dektop is known to be flaky, so I'm not making any judgements about Bluetooth IV on this. I've ordered a v2.0 of the diNovo (from the UK - not yet available in US) that is supposed to be much more stable - we'll see.

>Paired with my Parrot CK3100 BT handsfree car kit (for the phone) to upload new firmware to the car kit from the ThinkPad.

Here's what doesn't work so far (excepting the diNovo problems):

>Can't transfer files from ThinkPad to phone (e.g. ring tones). Using the OBEX File Transfer I drag or copy a file to a folder on the phone. It opens the Copying window and shows:

Creating FTP Connection...
Getting file/folder list...
Copying file 1 of 1...

but then fails consistently with "Invalid FTP request".

>Opening "My Bluetooth Places" always opens with a view of the "OBEX File Transfer" of my mobile phone. When first installed, MBP started with a blank window and I had to select "View Devices in Range", etc. Now I cannot figure out how to set it to open on any view other than OBEX FT.

I'd appreciate any feedback on your experience with BT IV or ideas on how to fix these two problems.

Regards - John

For the FTP issue, have you tried toggling the encryption setting in Widcomm?

For My Bluetooth Places, shouldn't it look something like this?

After related services are enabled on a device, you would see this:

FMA?

Have you tried Float's Mobile Agent (http://fma.sourceforge.net/)? It makes file transfers infinitely easier than the SE-included software.

I can drag and drop files in windows explorer to a sony ericssson phone using a third party bluetooth stack. FMA doesn't support drag and drop last time I tried.

On the My Bluetooth Places question, I get the following view whenever I start MBP:

My question sis how do I change the starting view to something else like View Devices in Range?

Re the file transfer error, I sent the info to Widcomm and they responded immediately with the following:

"Not sure why this error appears. Can you use the attached trace utility to get a trace of the FTP taking place so we can review..."

I am going to get the trace and see what they come up with.
