Questions on purchasing new components for a T40 and T43

#1 Post by an1mus0 » Mon Mar 25, 2019 6:03 am

Hey there! been lurking around for a while, especially a lot more now that I decided to make a account over a month ago. I have myself two T4x series Thinkpads, a T40 and a T43. The T43 runs pretty okay but it is missing a few keys and I'd like to have some help finding the best place to buy a new keyboard (or keys!) if possible. Similar situation for my T40 but the inverter is dead so I have no way of using it without having some bright light right up against the screen which is rather inconvenient. As I'm a Australian resident.. shipping is rather costly for me and I would appreciate any help or suggestions for getting these spare (if not too rare!) components without having to pay too much for shipping.

I wouldn't suggest you to buy the key caps, unless you don't have a lot that are missing.

By the way, if you could, please post your T40 and your T43's machine type and model (MTM) code. It would make it easier for us to identify which parts are compatible for your machines. Getting the wrong replacement is generally never a good experience, at least in my opinion.

IIRC there are 3 different manufacturers for the keyboards, and there's a fair chance that the keycaps are different between them, especially with regards to the scissor mechanism underneath.

I guess that is out, then. I did not expect Chicony or ALPS or NMB to have differing mechanisms, apart from how well they were built.

Not only do they have three different key mechanisms, there are also 2 types of keyboard: 14.1" and 15" models.
Even though their outside dimensions are identical, some of their mounting studs are differently placed, meaning a 14.1" KB does NOT fit in the 15" model and v.v.
14.1" KB has 4 mounting studs, of which 2 under the trackpoint-buttons.
15" KB has 3 studs, of which 1 under the trackpoint-buttons, in a different place.
The other 2 studs, under the keys themselves, are in the same positions on both types.
You could remove the stud(s) from under the trackpoint buttons to make them fit in both types, but the result is a bit 'wobbly'.

I have 2x 14.1" NMB US-English and 3x 14.1" Chicony US-English as spares. (no 15" keyboards)
All good-looking and in good working order.
Priced each at $15 (NMB) and $12 (Chicony).

======================================

Similar 'problem' with inverters, 14.1" inverters have 2 mounting holes, 15" only 1.
They are not interchangeable.
14.1" has 1 inverter for XGA/SXGA+
15" has 1 inverter for XGA, and another inverter for SXGA+/UXGA

I have 2x 14.1" inverter and 1x 15" SXGA+/UXGA inverter.
Priced each at $8 (14.1") and $15 (15").

=======================================

To see what KB and inverter you have, look at the P/N or FRU on them, and download the T40 and T43 manuals (Intel and ATI) with parts-list from the HMM link above.

Shipping a 1 Lbs. package to Oz would be $23.50
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

I would suggest swapping the screen parts around to investigate what really is the reason of no backlight (that is, be careful not to touch the part under the tape of the inverter or short it). Could be a dead CCFL tube, dead inverter, dead fuse or a dead motherboard. Know what you need before purchasing it.

I have a T43 and a T41 that I would be interested in selling and I live in Perth and I will be back in Perth in about 2 weeks.

My T43 is a 14 inch XGA and has the 2.13 GHz CPU X300 GPU and 160 GB HD or we could fix you up with parts that you need.

It would probably be cheaper to purchase a complete unit which you could pickup.

PM me if interested.

My T40's type and model code is 2373 and I am not too sure on the location of the model code on the older Thinkpads. My T43 is type 1871.
