Problems with VMware on T43?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Sat Jul 02, 2005 4:54 pm

Is anyone using VMware workstation on their T43? I'm trying to run a guest MS dos machine without much success. The virtual machine boots to my startup floppy image but then only allows one or two commands before locking up completely. I understand that both VMware and Virtual PC have issues when it comes to speedstep. To get around this, the VMware knowledge base suggests setting up some parameters in a config.ini file. I tried this but to no avail. I've also set the power manager to max performance.

Any suggestions as to workarounds would be much appreciated. The article also suggested as a last resort that disabling speedstep altogether might help but for me, that would really be an unacceptable solution as battery life is important.

Thanks,

I have IBM PC DOS 6.3 running fine as a guest machine under VMware 5. I built the machine using VMware 4.x initially.

I looked at my VM settings and see that I set Memory to be 8 Mb. The default recommendation is 16 Mb and I recall a certain amount of crashing until I reduced the memory allocation to 8 Mb. Try it and see.

Hmm,
Nope. Still crashes even after taking it down to 8 megs. What power management settings are you using, and which model T43 do you have? Mine is the 22668-75U.

The DOS machine setting works (worked) on PC300PL Desktop, NetVista A30 Desktop, ThinkPads A22e, T23, T30 and now my T41. I think my T41 has speedstep. I use the ThinkPad Default power setting on my T41, but I used to use "Always on" on the other T models and A22e. ... JD Hurst
