T43p FAST OR NOT? - an empirical test

#1 Post by goran5 » Sun Jul 03, 2005 8:35 am

Sometimes when you're waiting for the logon screen to show up, you feel that it take immensely long time for the system to start. So I decided to gauge it. Here're the results from my brand new T43p/2GB/60GB7200RPM/UXGA/ (2668H2G).

12 s. black XP screen shows
39 s. blue WinXP logon screen shows
45 s. through the fingerprint logon procedure (after one failing attempt)
1.02 s. desktop picture shows
1.30 s. all services started (currently 70 of them running, including 7 svchost.exe)

Other field studies in the subject are welcome :) . For a comparison, my old Tecra 8100 used around 5 min for the same procedure, but then of course, it didn't have the same amount of ram and so on.

Software factors are often more decisive than hardware as far as XP boot time is concerned. It took 28 seconds to get to desktop screen on my old laptop with 900MHz ULV banias with a 4200rpm hdd.

With my T42, it takes 45 seconds since it has to load IBM power management service, trackpoint driver, thinkpad hotkey manager, dvd-ram driver and bluetooth stack.

The speed of a boot up has more to do with the software that is being loaded that anything else.

The only way my Thinkpad can beat my desktop is through suspend or hibernate (Barely!)

Desktop = Long BIOS thing (Checks RAID controler on motherboard/SATA controler/RAM/PCI IDE Card). Then after that you get to Windows XP which takes 7 or so seconds (Thank you 10,000 RPM 36.7 Raptor!), which proceeds to windows loading (SETI@Home... Anti Virus... MSN Messenger, massive ammount of background tasks, 4 temperature monitoring and recording programs... Daemon tools so I can play my game with 700MB image of my CD on it, ATI Tool + Overclock videocard at startup...) Etc etc. But its quite fast (Including my T43 2687DDU)

T43 has more things to load (Power/trackpoint/etc)
If I were to do a coldboot (No hibernate/suspend), my TP would be a turtle againist an hypersonic miltary grade atomsphereic superbomber. (Takes me a while). But on suspend, my TP beats my computer to loading to desktop by 1-3 seconds

PS - Both systems have been defragmented to SYSTEM FILES level to be fair
