ThinkPad T41p screen size confusion (did I get a T42p instead of the claimed T41p?)

ThinkPad T41p screen size confusion (did I get a T42p instead of the claimed T41p?)
I have subj. According to every source I can find the T41p models only had 14.1" displays available to them, and yet here is a T41p I got off eBay that has a label (the one where the WiFi, Bluetooth, power, HDD and other lights are) saying it is T41p, the description of the item on eBay was saying it is a T41p with a 14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050) screen, yet it clearly has a 15" SXGA+ screen - the whole laptop is of almost exactly the same size as my 4:3 T60p with 15" 1600x1200 screen, and I've also actually measured it with a tape measurer. It is a 15" screen, no doubt about it. What adds to the confusion is that seller claimed to have originally had a 1.8GHz Pentium M in there, and have installed a 2GHz one. AFAIK 1.8GHz and 2GHz versions would be Dothan, not Banias, and CPU-Z confirms that this unit has a Pentium M 755 Dothan installed, whereas T41p used Banias CPUs. The video is clearly FireGL T2, which was used in both T41p and T42p. I've ran 'wmic csproduct get name' and got 2373-GEU, which seems to be a T41p build, but then when I search for info about the screen on that model I get 14.1" everywhere, not the 15" I got.
So at this point the only explanation I have is that perhaps some previous owner (possibly not even the seller) for whatever reason installed a 14.1" T41p mobo into a 15" T42p body, and then moved the model label to the new body as well so that it matches the insides. My question is, is that something feasible?
Next is the CPU - I couldn't find info on the exact chipset differences (if any) between T41p and T42p, but considering both had the same graphics would it be reasonable to assume that both had pretty much the same motherboard, so installing a Dothan CPU in a T41p wouldn't be a problem at all?
If both of the above questions have positive answers, then my guess is I got a T41p with a T42p CPU in a 15" T42p body, which effectively makes it a 15" T42p machine. If that's the case, is there anything other than sourcing and price that's stopping me from installing a 1600x1200 display panel in it?

I believe that your diagnosis is correct for the most part, only the frame is likely a standard T42 one which would explain the SXGA+ LCD. All "p" models in the 15" T4x range sported UXGA panels, higher-end T42/43 units came with SXGA+.MooNWalker wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 7:00 pm

For an UXGA panel you'd need a matching LCD cable but everything else stays the same.
Enjoy that oldie!

You're (almost) correct about the body donor - I noticed another detail, a mismatch between machine types on the bottom labels, with one of them matching the T41p and another matching the T43. With that, things do fall in place, mystery resolved.
I assume something like this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/BN-15-UXGA-IPS ... 1985848531) is the screen I'm looking for and I would need something like this (https://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-cable-Inve ... 2947613898) for the cable?

The cable is wrong and would not fit. You need an UXGA cable from T42p or T43p, check the HMM for FRU numbers, I can't remember them off the top of my head.MooNWalker wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 7:51 pm

As for the panel... on the price is all that I can say.
Screens in good shape are not an easy find. A cable should run you no more than $15-20.

Worst comes to worst, if the postage for cables cost you a fortune (like the case for me here), and if you are very confident in modding, you can try modding the existing cable to work with UXGA by changing some of the hard-wired jumper settings. I did it to a XGA cable on a R51 to install UXGA on it. Not recommended unless you really are good at soldering.

And there is also a nice Sharp UXGA screen from the Dell 800 series, such as this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sharp-15-Inch- ... 1174880840

Dothan CPUs can go into boards originally equipped with Banias easily. My family's R50p has a 1.8 ghz Dothan.

Thanks to RealBlackStuff I now have a true T42p (with a T41p sticker on it ) on the cheap. Now to get a proper T41p like I was originally intending...
