dropped my laptop... (pierced LCD/top cover)

#1 Post by iminlovewith » Mon Jul 04, 2005 3:32 am

i dropped my T40 a week ago. it was closed and landed on a sharp edge. the top cover was pierced, and it pierced through enough to bend the LCD screen. now, when i turn on the comp, i get a lot of funky colors all over the place..

im guessing this isnt covered by IBM warranty.

is there any CHEAP way to fix this? from what ive been seeing, it looks like i'll have to replace the LCD and the top cover behind the LCD. ive heard that this is really expensive though... if you guys were in my position, what would u do? should i just sell this broken one on ebay or should i part it out?

First, if the reason for the funky colors is that the LCD is bent by the cover, it might be fixed by straitening the cover out. LCDs give funky colors even to a slight push of the finger. If you could take the thing apart and remove the intrusion, I think that would fix it. You can also look for the specific damaged cover part number, and buy just that from IBM. One part shouldn't cost to much. If that doesn't work, you could buy an LCD panel and replace the panel too. The price would depend on its size and resolution, and the places that sells LCD panels has got instructions that shows you step by step how to replace that LCD panel. These instructions should help you also in taking the thing apart without damaging it. If you aren't sure of yourself give it to a lab or elect an other option.

PS. I once looked for the prices of 14" SXGA to see what happens if ... Well I have found out that IBM sells the panel for $600 and it is made by Samsung. I then searched Samsung web site and found it's latest panel model number. I then searched this model number, and that is how I have found the stores that sells these panels. The price there for the panel was around $400, and there was an option to buy a guaranty that there would be no dead pixels, and to buy an extended warranty. For an XGA panels the price is much lower, I didn't care for it so I don't remember exactly, but I think it was around $200. Google it.

Take a look on e-bay, or do a google search to see if anyone has a screen for your T-40. I purchased a used one (LCD complete with cover) on e-bay for my ThinkPad 600e about 6-months ago for about $50 (after I broke the LCD in an overpacked briefcase).

It wasn't too hard to replace, I just followed the IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual - FRU removal instructions.

thanks 4 the replys. just wanted to clarify. the lcd is basically shattered, and the top lid of the laptop has a pierce in 2 inches wide. is it easy to replace the LCD? i know the laptop itself still works b/c everything is fine if i plug a CRT into the VGA slot.

It sounds like you need to replace the whole top cover, LCD and all.
Go find one on ebay and just change the whole thing.
