Windows update not working after re-install
Hi All,
System is T43p-2668-GEU
I re-installed the OS(XO Pro) using previously created recovery discs and the process went smoothly till the end, however I'm facing 2 issues.
1. By default the system was at SP2 and for some reason its not doing the automatic updates to SP3 despite setting up auto-update mode. I also tried forcefully to do the updates but when the IE page opens, its gives an error on the page and does not continue further.
2. Wireless is not connecting however the wired method works.
Anyone come across these issues?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
Any and all XP updates need to be done manually.
XP is no longer supported, so auto-updates don't work any longer either.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
Hi and welcome to the forum.
XP SP2 is quite old, and it may require some update to the Windows Update itself (I think you need to install something called "Microsoft Update") to get updates working in 2019... However, it's been a while since I worked on a fresh SP2 install so I don't remember the details.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
Download and run "WSUS Offline Update" from here:
http://download.wsusoffline.net/
The program will upgrade the XP update program, update Win XP to SP3, and then install all other available MS Win XP updates, security and otherwise.
Takes a couple of hours to run, but fully automatic and when finished you will have a completely updated XP installation.... well, updated as far as Microsoft is concerned anyway, considering XP is no longer supported.
It can be run offline, no Internet connection required.
Been using it for years and it has never let me down.
Regards.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
The WSUS history file says:
Version 9.2.1 -- 05.05.14
- NOTE: This version will be the very very last one supporting Windows XP and Office 2003
Have you used a WSUS version newer than 9.2.1 to update Windows XP? Does version 9.2.1 work to update XP now, more than 5 years after its release?

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
XP may update for a small number of security updates (I see this happening on my XP virtual machine), but other updates have been stopped.
See if you can find the XP SP3 file on Microsoft Downloads and install manually.
Look at WSUS Offline and see if XP is still there. I used this to revive a Windows 7 machine a while back.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
Out of curiosity I nuked Windows 7 on my T43 (1872-4AU) and installed XP SP2 from recovery discs. Wireless WPA2 security is not supported in SP2 but is in SP3. Download SP3 from https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.co ... B936929%29.
You need to get Internet Explorer 8 next to get Windows Update running. Download it from http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... 86-ENU.exe. With the T43 connected to the internet install IE8. It will download updates and configure windows update.
At this point Windows Update should work and for me it found over 130 updates.
Although Microsoft ended support for XP in 2014, in 2017 there were
enough computers still running XP that they released a few security
updates for XP to address some serious malware rampant on the web.
Another similar security update was released in 2019.
Inexplicably Windows Update does not install most of these recent updates.
Use the links below to download the updates and install them manually.

I also ran WSUS Offline version 9.2.1 and it built an archive of nearly 300 updates for XP occupying 1.4GB of hard drive space. I did not use WSUS to update the XP installation since it was already up to date via windows Update.

Re: Windows update not working after re-install
I've used both Versions 9.1 and 9.2.4, I think the only difference is in the addition of Office 03 & 07 and WIN 8 updates to 9.2.4... I believe 9.1 only updates Win XP, at least the version that I downloaded does XP.
