T42 can't install (or find!) drivers for UJDA755y DVD/RW drive

#1 Post by Nilsog » Sun Sep 01, 2019 5:22 am

First post, and I've come here out of desperation, so I hope someone can help me.

I've recently purchased an IBM ThinkPad T42 2373. Everything seems to be working properly but the DVD/RW drive- the computer detects when I remove it or put it back in the bay, the device manager sees it as the Matshita UJDA755y, but can't find any drivers to install it. To make things worse, I myself cannot find any legit drivers for the drive, even after searching for compatible drives, different manufacturer names, different models, etc.

It seems that windows had it installed at one point, with a diver from 2001, and it showed up under "my computer" as "DVD/RW Drive" but it wouldn't read any discs, nor would it even spin up when I put a disc in the drive. Once I uninstalled this driver, windows refused to use it again?

I've tried a second, tested to work, drive in my machine and it will also not install. Even the drivers section of this website points to broken links or redirects to the Lenovo page which is absolutely no help. I even tried using their system update software, and it says it has no agents for my system.

I'm at my wit's end, can someone at least point me in the right direction?

Edit, I am using MS XP Pro at the moment.

Welcome to the forums. :)

DVD/RW drives do not need any special drivers in Windows XP; they are all built-in. Since you tried a different drive, and it also does not work - then either the connection is faulty, or something has corrupted the driver stack of your operating system.

You can try:
* Safe mode (to rule out a rogue piece of software/driver)
* Another OS (maybe some Linux live CD) - to rule-out a hardware problem
* Run sfc /scannow to find/correct any problems with system files
* Run an up-to-date malware scanner to make sure you are not infected
* Reinstall Windows

Click on the Drivers link at the top of this page and go to the T42.
Then (re)install the chipset drivers.
But you might still have a bad drive.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

So half my problem was a faulty disc, or at least a disc that won't work in this particular computer (driver disc that worked on my Gigabyte laptop... odd). I stuck a music CD in and it auto played. It onlt recognizes it as a CD ROM, but I downloaded imgBurn and it was able to successfully burn some files to a CD-R. So, I guess it works, even if I can't use windows to move files to discs. I'll be happy that it seems to working.

It's a laptop more than a decade old. I think it's understandable that the DVD drive is wonky.
Daily driver: X220 4291-C91 i7-2620M

Backup: X601 Core 2 Duo T8100
Toy: X60F Core Solo U1300
On loan: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M
In pieces: two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E; X61 7676-A24; and a BOE-Hydis HV121P01-100 in failed SXGA+ mod
