I've recently purchased an IBM ThinkPad T42 2373. Everything seems to be working properly but the DVD/RW drive- the computer detects when I remove it or put it back in the bay, the device manager sees it as the Matshita UJDA755y, but can't find any drivers to install it. To make things worse, I myself cannot find any legit drivers for the drive, even after searching for compatible drives, different manufacturer names, different models, etc.
It seems that windows had it installed at one point, with a diver from 2001, and it showed up under "my computer" as "DVD/RW Drive" but it wouldn't read any discs, nor would it even spin up when I put a disc in the drive. Once I uninstalled this driver, windows refused to use it again?
I've tried a second, tested to work, drive in my machine and it will also not install. Even the drivers section of this website points to broken links or redirects to the Lenovo page which is absolutely no help. I even tried using their system update software, and it says it has no agents for my system.
I'm at my wit's end, can someone at least point me in the right direction?
Edit, I am using MS XP Pro at the moment.
DVD/RW drives do not need any special drivers in Windows XP; they are all built-in. Since you tried a different drive, and it also does not work - then either the connection is faulty, or something has corrupted the driver stack of your operating system.
You can try:
* Safe mode (to rule out a rogue piece of software/driver)
* Another OS (maybe some Linux live CD) - to rule-out a hardware problem
* Run sfc /scannow to find/correct any problems with system files
* Run an up-to-date malware scanner to make sure you are not infected
* Reinstall Windows

Then (re)install the chipset drivers.
But you might still have a bad drive.
