#1 Post by arun » Tue Jul 05, 2005 1:33 pm

Guys,

I been checking the ship date for my TP42. It was suppose to ship July18. They were on backorder. I had ordered this machine last monday. It arrived today... SO AWESOME!!!

So what are some of the things i do first? Fresh Install? Remove some programs? Install some software?

Nice, i ordered a T43 and they said it will come end of July, but I'm hoping its sooner. Here is what i would do:

Test for dead pixels

Probably not needed, but you could use Prime95 to test your memory stability, see if there is any problems

Install Antivirus (AVG/AntiVir is free)

Firewall (Sygate/ZoneAlarm/Tiny)

Anti Spyware/Adware progs

Download newest drivers from manufactures: video card, wifi card, BIOS if needed

FireFox and extensions (Adblock w/ FiltersetG, mouse gestures, Google toolbar)

Tune start up programs, any BIOS settings (boot sequence if needed?)

Download/install any needed programs: Adobe Reader, Quicktime, Java, Flash player, newest DivX

Maybe defrag HD, and go!

one of the first things you should do if you don't already have it is to update to the latest version of the IBM Software installer. once you do that, run it and the program will take care of updating all preloaded software, drivers and bios revisions for you automatically, really cool!

I don't remember the URL for software installer off hand, but you can find it in other threads on this forum.

Thanks for the checklist. I ordered my T43 today too.

T43 2687-D3U
Pentium M 750 1.86
512MB
14.1" SXGA+ 64MB
60HS
DVD±RW
Intel 11a/b/g Modem
Fingerprint
5.4 hr 9-cell

It was a close call, but it beat out the Dell Latitude D610 by a nose.

Deciding factors: service reputation, spill resistant keyboard, cool fingerprint scanner; & 533 memory. But frankly. size matters most for me. I have to pack and tote the thing, so the thinness and light weight were big, big factors. The Dell D610 was a hair lighter in weight, but noticeably thicker. Plus I think a black surface will be more restful for my eyes than Dell gray. No Bluetooth, but I can add that once I figure out what I can do with it. On my Blackberry, it only operates that Borg looking earpiece.

Good luck to all the new Thinkpadders. And thanks to everyone here for your help and advice. It is good to know that there is such a high qualitty support network available. I hope that someday I too am able to contribute. 8)

Anthony, i ordered the exact same system on July 1! Officially, they said it will be shipped by July 28, but the rep said those estimates are very conservative and its quite possible that it will arrive in less than 2 weeks. Have you heard anything different? As far as deciding factors, don't forget the thinklight, 3 year warranty, free battery (that is what i choose), and the X300 (which is a plus considering its still a buisness laptop) I bought it with the visa discount, what about you?

The site I visited claimed to have it in stock. What is the Visa discount? I paid ~$1900.

Just yesterday they told me 2 weeks or so, and now it shipped! Anyway, IBM/lenvo has a 10% discount when you use a Visa or Mastercard, but can only choose from a selection, but its a pretty big selection (only thing lacking is 7200 HD models) You have to use a special site, i forget it now. Also, there an educational/alumni discount, and an employee discount

Notebookforless.com notified me yesterday that the 2687-D3U unit has shipped. The order got held up a day because of a security limit on my debit card. My fault. But it should arrive at the office Monday. Fingers crossed:!:

I think this worked out to be a lower price for me even after the Lenovo Visa discount. Price was $1801, shipping was a cheaper ($18 )and there was no tax. Florida's 7% sales tax takes a chunk out of the discount. 2-day FedEx was only $18 extra. A check of the price this am shows a sight increase to $1831, but I think it is still the lowest online total price.

Will post an update after it arrives.

I would definitely make a frsh install of WXP, follow the instructions in teh thread about making a fresh WINXP SP2 cd, and then refresh your entire system. After that install AVG antivirus and Spywareblaster, before you download and install the programs you want from IBM!

Then I promise you you have a much faster system!! Use CHC centrino hardware control to get the most out of your battery an lower heat an fan-noise!

Then you have the most reliable and fasr system you can have with IBM, this computer beats every other manufacture of Laptop pc's when you have done all the things mensured!! Good Luck!

I paid $1875 from lenovo, and got the free 6 cell battery, so i think its worth the extra $50 to have the 9 cell and then the 6 cell when i really need portability.
