1400 resolution, could I regret it ?

#1 Post by visitor » Tue Jul 05, 2005 6:35 pm

I'm about to choose a new 14.1-inch screen Thinkpad, either a T42 or T41, and I noticed that the models with better graphic card are not offered in XGA resolution (1024x768).
I understand the better card (like an ATI 64mb) plays an important role in the machine's overall performance and allows for larger resolutions in external monitors.
My concern is: text reading. Will I be able to configure fonts for a comfortable and not blurry size ?
As for comparison, will a 1400 SXGA+ in a 14.1-in screen be harder to provide comfortable reading than an XGA in a 12-in screen ?

Appreciate any word of advice.

There's no way to tell until you actually look at the higher res display, but from my personal experience, I would say that the majority of people can easily deal with the SXGA+ (1400x1050 display).
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

the text and icons are definitely smaller on the 14" SXGA+ (my ThinkPad) than a 12" XGA (my PowerBook), but it is not uncomfortable unless you have lousy vision. I'm about 20/50 and even wihtout my glasses it is legible, though the glasses really help. On the PowerBook glasses are not of much benefit for me.

Of course, if the display items are too small, there is always zoom.

Personally, I wouldn't go back to XGA for a 14" panel and find the SXGA on the T-series about perfect.
