My new (ebay purchase) T23 will not boot anymore!

#1 Post by jongordo8 » Wed Jul 06, 2005 7:02 am

I got a T23 from ebay, supposedly in great condition but used. I formatted the HD and put XP SP2 on it. Got everything set up and it was working great until last night.

I was using it on battery power and all of a sudden the screen goes black, and it will not allow me to turn it off (fan begins running at full speed). I take battery out, but it back in, and restart it.

It boots into windows for 5 seconds and screen goes blank except for a white horizontal line a quarter of the way down. Can't turn it off again and fan is running at full speed).

The third time it won't boot or post. All it does is LED lights come on, power light comes on. The fan surges between full speed and a slow speed (full speed, slow speed, full speed, slow speed, full speed, slow speed, etc.). This is now how it acts anytime you attempt to turn it on.

I have a feeling it might be a cooling issue or power issue. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could try or what the problem maybe?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to run the T23 on AC power? With and without the battery? How old is the battery? (rough idea)

I have had the computer for 8 days now.

I did attempt to run it without the batteries and just off the power supply, same problem. I also have a new battery and a new ultrabay battery in addition to the original battery provided. All 3 work fine. I even took out the HD to see if it would just post, and got the same issue.

This is why I believe it maybe a problem with the cpu cooler, cpu, or power supply. I was hoping someone on here that is much more knowledge than myself would be able to identify with these symptoms and let me know what the culprit is.

Since it works for a short time...
1) Update the BIOS http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39362

2) Update the embedded controller http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-40021

3) Run diagnostics for the T23:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F

Does it fail after a few minutes sitting on the CMOS screen? If so, it is a hardware issue...if not, you may be lucky, and its a software issue....

I can no longer get the computer to post (show a screen of any sort), therefore I am unable to access bios or cmos screen. The only thing it does is power on, LED's go on and the cpu cooler surges!

Maybe it's a RAM issue. Try to replace the RAM, if you have a spare one or borrow a compatible one from friends just to check.
Good luck!

You may have the same issue as this T-22 owner. See the following link:

I'm not going to say this is definitely the problem, but this sounds, minus the fan, like exactly what my previous Compaq started doing--especially the fewer and fewer minutes of working time until it wouldn't start at all part. The cure was a new motherboard.

What exactly do you mean by the "CPU cooler surges"?

Does it rev up, then down, then up, then down repeatedly?

Could you also test the AC adapter and be sure it is outputting the correct voltage constantly?

If you answer those two questions I will tell you the issue.

Yes the cooler revs up, then down, then up, then down repeatedly.

I did get the computer to boot for like 15 secs today, and than it cut out (power stayed on, however the screen went blank and couldnt turn computer off using power button) when it was booting into XP.

Anyhow I tried changing ram, didnt work.

How do you suggest I test the AC adapter to see if it is outputting voltage constantly? The problem happens on both battery and AC power though.

I appreciate any and all help you guys have provided.

Bad system board.

When it revs up and down you will have no display. It may boot from time to time but only briefly.

It was probably damaged in shipping. 1 good bang will cause this issue. Getting the shipping co to cover it will be difficult.

You can check your warrantee here- if it is under warantee IBM will take care of it:

how do I go about finding a new one, and how do I make sure it is the correct one?

AbsoluteRaleigh I sent you a private message as well.

Download the IBM Hardware Maintenance Manual from the following link:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... chineind=0

The part number for the system board is in the Hardware Maintenance
Manual. Search on e-bay using the part number, or you could do a Google
search on the part number as well. You will probably find a system board for
your T-23 for sale.
