T42p or T43p !??

#1 Post by Aramitz » Wed Jul 06, 2005 7:51 am

I plan buying a new TP.
I'm not in a hurry and the price is not the most important.
I want à 15' and I'm asking if the T43p is really a improvement vs the T42 !?
What can I attend to a Yonah ? Early 2006 ?

I use it for watching/engraving DVD + internet
Thanks a lot for your clever answers :)

i would recommand T42p. Intel always delay their new chip release date, either IBM. Sonoma was delayed half year and finally released approximately on 19th January, and IBM shipped my t43p on 1st June. So there's totally 1 year different from the original release date to received my laptop.

I can only tell you why I bought T43. The faster front side bus, 533 instead of 400MHz, the faster dual channel memory, and the improved chipset. Will I even need any of those things. Maybe, maybe not. But I do know that any laptop you buy will probably be outdated in 6 months as software and, yes, even web sites, add capacity to take advantage of the new technology. . I didn't want to start with an older style model.

This is just me and how I think. You may have entirely different values. And I agree, why buy a ThinkPad at all. After all, it is a performance machine. And there are lots of $700-$800 computers that are fine for watching DVDs and surfing the web. Click Here! Add a wireless adapter and you got lotsa bucks left over for buyng more DVDs.

I own a t43p and tried a t42p @ 2.1Ghz before, their performance are pretty close.
1.) The front bus seems big different but actually not.
2.) IBM only offer one DDR RAM chip in their machine normally. If you want to make a dual channel, got to buy another one by yourself. Extra $$ for couple % different performance improved?
3.) "But I do know that any laptop you buy will probably be outdated in 6 months as software and, yes, even web sites" Normally I set my thinkpad at maximum battery (800Mhz) and everthing works cool, never feel lag or freez. So "outdate" really depends what are you gonna use it for. For gaming? 3 months probably. For MS office? Perhaps 10 years.
4.) T42p beat up t43 pretty bad. Older model not meaning lower performace plus their price are very close now.
5.) T43p got higher teamperature and shorter battery life, but can't notice the machine get faster.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

 As I said....

This is my first ThinkPad. I have looked at and played with them, but never done serious benchmarking of any of the models. So I don't have the benefit of your comparative experience. Just sharing the thought process that I used to make my own personal choice. And, boy have I been wrong before. :)

Cnet agrees with you that the performance difference did not warrant what was at that time the price differential. But, as you said, that differential has shrunk considerably so I went with the newer Sonoma technology.

You are also right that six months is an exaggeration. But you can bet there's already a T44, Centrino 800, or some other new replacement top-of-the-line systems on some developer's design table at Lenovo and Intel. It's the nature of the technology beast. Whether it's better/worse, faster/slower, major advance/minor step, worth it/not, etc., will be hotly debated until six months later (oops! that darn exaggeration again) when the next big thing is unveiled.

Been there, done that, got the receipts... :)

Will Yonah be a real improvement for ordinary tasks ?
With Yonah, our TP will switch on/off quicker ?

My new T42p (two weeks old) is fast and quiet. And it shipped almost immediately after I ordered it. I recommend the 14-incher. Its resolution is good for graphics programs.

Hi :)
Can you tell me how long your T42p needs for switching on/off ?
I should prefer a T42p (genuine IBM) coz don't playing at all with the laptop,I don't need a monster.
With its speedy HD &2 Gb of RAM it'll be all right for ripping DVDs. :)
