IBM Thinkpad T43p & Windows 10 in 2020, perfecto !

#1 Post by Droider » Sun May 10, 2020 3:30 pm

Hello everyone,

Wish everyone is safe of the corona in their homes at these tough times. Like the rest of us in lockdown, i got nobody/nothing to play but my T43p.

I am a huge fan of T43p with FlexView, it is still an excellent device today. It was running windows xp amazingly since i upgraded it with samsung ssd through the 44pin ide adapter, 300mbps Atheros wifi-n card, 2gb ram and pm770 2.13ghz, pretty much making it an ultimate t43p except the satamod and pm780. However the internet with Windows XP is no fun even with every update installed and various lite browsers, the machine couldn't have peace with it. Not to mention the current versions of applications not supporting Windows XP. Though Windows 7 runs perfectly fine with T43p and some linux flavours, both aren't my cup of tea. So, I pulled the trigger to install windows 10, cause why not. There are many successful reports from fellow forum members. T43p matches the minimum requirements of Windows 10. At the worst, things would fail and i would go back to windows xp :?

So, the latest version of Windows10 1909 setup doesn't even start and ends with a blue screen error of IRQ etc. Fellow thinkpadder kfzhu1229 suggests anniversary edition viewtopic.php?t=126726#p821286 which is Win10_1607_English_x32.

After a quick burn of the 1607 iso with rufus, W10 setup starts and finishes in no time. T43p boots into Windows 10 :D Here are my steps to prevent microsoft to mess things with their updates, some drivers info, tips and my experience with the whole process.

1- Windows Update Mini tool : Powerful utility to download and install missing drivers from windows update and hide unwanted system updates. You can select what you want to install with it from WU. I downloaded and installed audio, pm, monitor and some other drivers that it could find. Nothing else, did its job well.

2- Sledgehammer script to stop automatic windows updates. This is necessary cause if WU installs OS updates, your T43p will be stuck with blue screen on boot.

3- Modded ATI vista drivers that works for Firegl V3200/X600/X300 in T43p. I patched this myself and uploaded to my google drive, so i could save you some time from downloading two files and patching the driver in a winxp or win7 machine yourself. Just run the setup.exe as admin.

4- Blank TPM Driver provided by xenomorph, thanks !

5- Go to Control Panel > Power options > Choose what the power buttons do > Click to change settings that are currently unavailable > Unclick " turn on fast startup "
This is necessary, otherwise windows10 doesn't really shut itself down and whenever you turn it on, you will get stuck with a black empty screen instead of your desktop cause T43p misses the hardware to support fast startup feature. While my "solution" works, see post #2 for other solutions by kfzhu1229.

This is it, just wanted to share and happy to find out windows 10 runs perfectly fine with T43p as long as it is not pushed too far. You can squeeze even more performance if you disable visual effects of windows10 which i didn't. To my surprise, FN hotkey functions work. Laptop runs cooler even than it did with Windows XP. No additional software like Thinkpad Power manager is necessary as it will be a big burden of startup services on the limited hardware. I can watch youtube videos within the latest EDGE browser in 360p without video/audio stutters. 720p youtube is buttery smooth with potplayer streaming. Microsoft office, latest winamp, latest version of vlc, k-lite codec pack, powerdvd, avermedia tv, all runs perfectly fine for my needs :thumbs-UP: :D

I was using Windows 10 ever since the insider previews and stuck with it until my T43p mobo failed a few months ago, then I switched to a Latitude D830 because they are much cheaper to find and gave me a generally good experience for what I paid for.

Well actually the fast startup DOES work, but you have to get the screen to turn off and turn back on for the screen to display anything more than a cursor. It is a graphics driver bug. You can make it turn the screen off using nircmd upon logon and then when you move the mouse the screen works just fine. Making Windows reload a different screen calibration profile also works.
Windows 10 on a V3200 card with UXGA works alright for the most part, however I did try UXGA with a X300 and the Aero animations are a slideshow (However same is true for Windows 7).
YouTube used to work before they started purposely cucking its performance on Microsoft Edge.
Also the Edge browser in 1607 is seeing its age though. I have a couple of sites that I need that will no longer work properly.
Fn hotkeys all work, but you need an older on screen display driver for Windows Vista if you want to get that to work as the volume hotkeys on those ThinkPads do NOT control the volume slider inside Windows.
You can also use a registry hack to enable two finger vertical scrolling, the guide is in this forum.
Also I have the V3200 with Pentium M 780 before. With that motherboard turning out to have a bad binned V3200, my V3200 ran extremely toasty (idling in the mid 50s with fan on 3)
While video playback works perfectly in 1607, it will run much more toasty than something like a T61 or my D830 with a NVS 135M or 140M because these GPUs support native h264 decoding up to 1080p.
The reason why I rolled back from 1703 and 1709 is because under those versions I wasn't able to get any of the old codec pack as well as VLC and MPC to work properly.

Thank you for your valuable input, i thought fast startup wasn't supported hence causing the issue. Anyway it is better to stay off. :D
