T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
So a while back I bought 2GB (2x1GB) Kingston ram modules from an ebay seller within Canada, and I also bought a Petium M 755 (2.0ghz) to upgrade the 1.7ghz Pentium M that was in there.
The RAM came in a long time ago, but due to coming from China, the CPU only came in today.
I just did the upgrade.
Initially when I went to boot it up after, it wouldn't boot, the screen was just entirely blank, so naturally I thought I was screwed. However I tried putting the old ram stick (the one under the keyboard, because it worked with the new ram installed in the memory bay on the bottom which had be done a long time ago) back and then booting, and lo and behold it booted just fine, and recognized the new processor without issue.
So I am glad I didn't screw something up beyond repair, and that the laptop itself still works.
I then tried putting the new ram back in, thinking that maybe it just couldn't handle new ram, and a new cpu at the same time, but it still didn't boot at all.
I just tried it with the internal ram slot empty, and it boots like that too.
So I wonder is there possibly some other reason it doesn't like the new internal ram module, or is the one module most likely just bad?

Re: T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
Try cleaning the contacts with contact cleaners or alcohol if you don't have a bottle of contact cleaner (you can buy that in Canadian Tire, the Motomaster branded ones designed for automobiles work just fine on a RAM stick).
Also the Pentium M 765 is supposed to be 2.1Ghz and I wasn't able to find it on eBay at all when I need them to upgrade the Banias cores in my T41's so I got three 755's instead, leaving one to upgrade a Latitude D600 that I have in China.
These T4x devices can be picky for max RAM at times. I wasn't able to get two Kingston 1GB sticks to boot on a T43 so I ended up swapping it on my D610 so I have one Hynix stick one Kingston stick on both my D610 and T43.
Test both of your sticks by inserting one of them inside you computer at a time and see if they all pass memtest86

Re: T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
Yes, I edited my post when I realize I said 765 when I meant 755.
I tried cleaning with alcohol, doesn't seem to have worked, the contacts also looked perfectly clean before.
Edit:
I just tried removing the module from the bottom, and replacing it with the one that wouldn't work internally, and it's not booting this way either.
So I assume it's just bad in that case.

Re: T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
So you have a DOA RAM? Ah well I guess not entirely unexpected as max capacity 16 chip RAM modules really do fail more often. I have had two dead 1GB DDR SODIMMs and two dead 512MB SDRAM SODIMMs.

Re: T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
It appears that way yes.
I've already contacted the seller, and also got a response. They said they will send another one, or send me a half refund, which is fair. I haven't decided which I am going to do yet, as I found a seller right here in Niagara Falls selling various different ram modules for laptops, I'll just have to determine if they have one that'd work for me, and ask if they will allow me to pick up locally. If so, then I'd gladly go for the half refund, if they will still have to "ship" it to me for some weird reason, then It'd depend on if it'd cost me more to buy another one, or get the seller to replace it.
I used the same Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste when installing the 755, that I used when upgrading my main modern desktop to an i7-4790k 4ghz and it cools the i7 fine, so I figured if it can adequately help cool that, it should have no problem cooling a Pentium M.

Re: T42 CPU & RAM Upgrade Issue
I've never actually had a DOA RAM module, but I did (somehow) accidentally squash a chip on a 4GB DDR2 module for a T61. It would boot but memtest86 gave me a massive red screen of errors. When I closely examined the module I noticed the squashed chip. I don't know how it happened, but it really pi$$ed me off because those are about $50 each. Its still sitting here...
