How do u clean your TP?

#1 Post by stalin » Sat Jul 09, 2005 3:07 pm

Hey gang,

Probably funny question, but still, how exactly do you clean the lid of your TP? Whatever I do, the lid always has my fingerprints on it, needless to say it doesn't look nice, does it?
I would appreciate any advice on the issue, thnx.

PS: It is T43p, if I'm not mistaken, they all have the same lid type, right?!

Personnally i use isopropyillic alcohol for the lid. And for the screen, I mish it with water (1/5 alcohol, 4/5 water)

Whatever you do, just be careful about using a vacuum over the keyboard. Some on this forum have vacuumed up their keys!

50% water,50%alcohol, and a old cotton t-shirt.
Best combination to remove stains, fingerprints and other stuff.
I have my trackpoint cap vacuumed.. so, be careful!

I uninstall the battery and then use a moist cloth (just water) and wipe the whole thing over, and dry it with a towel - very gently. Same goes for the screen. I only use water. I then uninstall the keyboard, and use compressed (canned, dry) air to blow any dust out of the fan and heatsinks, and exhaust. Same with the keyboard, after a wipe off with soap water (to take any grease from use). Take off the trackpoint cap and rinse it in soap water to get any grease off aswell. I then install the keyboard and battery. There you go, clean Thinkpad.

IBMnoob, what exact type of Armorall wipes do you use? I have used one of these on the Thinkpad exterior once, I think the product was called was called "Armorall extreme vinyl protector" and found that this was a mistake: the laptop became very shiny, the Armorall created some sort of a thin varnish-like layer. It wore off eventually after a mont of carrying around, but since then I only dared to use soap water and compressed air only.
I think if some substance behaves like this, it does not just wipe off grime, but may also be capable of dissolving or otherwise breaking-down some materials. What do you guys think?

Well.... for the case, I think these are great. But you should never use eyeglass cleaners on LCD screens. For the screen, I prefer these special LCD cleaners. You can also find them packaged as Apple iBook cleaning wipes. Keep a couple of individually packaged singles (both types) just for the occasional jelly donut incident. The keyboard cover to prevent keyboard dirt from transferring to the screen is cool. Although I admit, I've rarely used it. Just not that er... retentive. (Have you ever noticed that Apple users get really cool stuff made for them?)

Does anyone know anything about these screen protective films? Do they cause distortion? I like the idea, but wish there was one already cut to size for my 14.1" TP. Is there?

I use klearscreen cleaning wipes. They contain specially formulated wet/dry cloths. I also use a Shaggymac 14" LCD protector that fits between the lcd and the keyboard when you close your laptop. That way you dont get oil transfer from the keyboard to the LCD. It also doubles as a gentle dust remover (when using klearscreen wipes is overkill). I am anal retentive when it comes to having a clean laptop so this might not be necessary for you. All in all, it cost me about $25 for my cleaning supplies. 8)

Does anyone know anything about or have comments/concerns/recommendations about screen protective films such as these? Do they cause distortion? Two people have already touched my screen. Yuk!
