FAT32 on T43?

#1 Post by rxl77 » Sun Jul 10, 2005 9:46 pm

I just realized that my T43 that I got two months ago, that the C: is a FAT32?

Why isnt this a NTFS? Is it because of the hidden partition? Should I try to reformat and go to NTFS?

I dont have the recovery CD's, so how would I do this?

It should have converted when it started up the first time. There is a convert programs (look in Windows Help for NTFS or Convert) and run convert to change from FAT to NTFS. No need to reimage or reinstall.

Yep, mine ran thru the file system conversion on first boot as well. However, I did a clean install & deleted the R&R partition a few hours later :)

I tried running it through dos, doing what Microsoft recommended, but it said I'm missing an "autoconv.exe" file which won't let me convert it to NTFS.

What can I do to convert it

When I first got my T43, I installed Zone Alarm and that caused this massive problem where XP would boot up, but then BSOD and reboot over and over. So I eventually just did a factory restore off the hidden partition. I'm thinking off the factory restore, that the conversion of the NTFS never went thru.

How do I get to NTFS since I can't convert it using the Microsoft method?

Doing a factory restore, it might lead to the same thing that the conversion didn't go thru.

What do you all think?

On my T41, autoconv.exe is sitting in System32 as well as in Service Pack files. This suggests you could download SP2 (big file) and install it or reinstalll and possibly fix this problem. SP2 rewrites much of XP.

Why not just copy the file from any Windows XP SP2 computer available? Like jdhurst said, I found the file in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 directory. The file is listed as 588 KB in size - just over 1/2 MB. The file version on my Windows XP Pro SP2 system is 5.1.2600.2180.
