The T43 is Sonoma.

In general the progression would go from banias to dothan to sonoma. Dothan and sonoma are clear improvements over the already excellent banias, but the difference between the sonoma and the dothan is fairly small. The Sonoma is more power hungry and runs a bit warmer but is also a little bit faster, but the difference isn't huge. The best balance is probably the dothan.

But if you get a new Dothan or Sonoma, you probably won't be disappointed.

Actually, the T43's use Dothan processors as well. Sonoma is the name given to the next generation Centrino platform (chipset/wireless/cpu). The next generation platform is named Napa and it will have the Yonah dual-core mobile processor as well as a new chipset and wireless.

According to the IBM ThinkPad Systems Reference, the T43s have the 915 chipset and DDR2 memory which makes them Sonoma and not Dothan. Please correct me if I'm reading this incorrectly.

The combination of Pentium M processor and Iintel wireless is referred to as Centrino and all three of the processors can be Centrino if they have Intel wireless.

The CPU is different as is the chipset.

Banias and Dothan are codenames for different generations of the Intel Pentium M processor.

Centrino is just the name given to a certain combination of parts (processor, chipset, wireless, etc). The second generation Centrino platform is called Sonoma.

Now that you mention that I think I recall hearing of people upgrading "sonoma" laptops with higher speed "Dothan" chips but I'm not sure.

I don't think the dothan chips generally support the 133 bus but I'm not sure.

Yes the CPU is different in the T43. However, they still use Dothan Pentium M's, but they're Dothans that use a 533MHz front side bus (as opposed to the 400MHz FSB that the Banias and the first Dothans used).

so confusing.

I am looking at buying a new system on the credit card site of IBM, how can i tell what each machine has, banias or dothan?

Thanks.

brewt is spot on. Dothan is the newest CPU type. It was used in first generation Centrinos, but is much better paired with the second generation: Sonoma. All sonoma chipsets include a Dothan CPU. Most 855 (old) chipsets include Dothan, but it could be banias.

The PM 760 in my T43 runs stable at 2.0ghz @ 1.084v. The default voltage is 1.308v, so I'd say the new 533mhz FSB Dothan's are spot-on for some major under-voltaging (at least mine was)
