T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
Hi everyone,
I just got a msata to pata adapter for my t43 1873.
I had upgrade the bios from http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_w ... hard_disks with the bios : $0199000_SLIC2.1_M09_no_1802_no_2010.ROM
And now don't shows any disk erro anymore.
When I install the msata adpter w/ the msata the t43 detect the ssd on boot menu and the windows 7 detect too but when I'm almost done with installation of w7 the erro "windows could not update registry data in the installation" show up and the installation won't finish.
Do you guys have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
My adapter it's a JMicron JM20330
And my msata it's TCSunBow 60GB SSD M-SATA3.
I know it's not a really got ssd but I just wanted to try.
Thanks you guys in advance.

Long read here about SSD in T43: viewtopic.php?t=112081&start=90
Search on that page for JMICRON.
I'd say your cheap Chinese knockoffs are causing your problem.
A good alternative would be the 160GB Samsung HM160HC HDD.
Even at 5400rpm it surpasses almost any 7200rpm HDD and it's also very quiet (AND cheap).
IMHO best HDD worldwide for an (un-SATA-modded) T43.

I read most of the topic and some small stuff I not even know what that means ahah but it's ok we all here for fun...
Just a question, since I can't have a Microsoft OS can I put a Linux OS working with my setup?
Which Linux is the most stable for my T43? I always can go back to my 40gb Hitachi 5400rpm..

Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
I believe it's just your SSD being low quality. Even getting a used msata SSD name branded on local Kijiji is a far more viable option.
And well if you want faster/bigger native IDE drives, I do happen to have a 100GB 7200RPM IDE drive and a 160GB (128GB usable due to IBM firmware to avoid error 2010) 5400RPM IDE drive, both Hitachi travelstar. And I am located in Toronto.
As for what Windows OS works on a T43 Intel GMA version, any Windows NT based OS from 4.0 Sp6a all the way to Windows 7 would work fine. Windows 8 to 10 version 1709 will also work but no display drivers available as the GMA does not support DX9 by hardware.
The other option is you can always mount a regular 2.5" SATA drive on a Ultrabay slim to SATA adapter and put the 40GB IDE drive as a secondary drive.

Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
1st good news.
I managed to make it work the xubuntu-18.04.5 with my msata(piece of crap) and the adpter.
I had to forcepae command to make it work but at the end the OS was installed with success!
But kinda slow on light browsing for my taste, not sure it's the ssd or the laptop itself that cause the slow-motion browsing.
I reboot a few times and was ok and fast.
That lives me to a new question.
Can I steal keys from a keyboard for a t42 15" and put just the keys on a 14"?
I know it's a weird question but it's a guy selling for cheap a keyboard on kijiji for t42 but it's a 15" and I know u can't use them on the 14".
Anyone knows if it's ok to do JUST THE KEYS swap?

I'm thinking of giving up the idea of use a ssd on this T43.
I may look in the future for a ide hdd for my other t42p. But 1st I need to make it usable. He needs 2 keys on the keyboard.

I'm interested to try the W10 on the t43, it's any link or topic that I can have more info about or even to download? It's probably necessary do some stuff before or after the installation.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 7:10 pmAs for what Windows OS works on a T43 Intel GMA version, any Windows NT based OS from 4.0 Sp6a all the way to Windows 7 would work fine. Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
Well in my experience you should. The computer is enough of a bottleneck that a fast 7200rpm drive would perform just about the same. Doesn't help that the built in SATA to IDE conversion within the motherboard creates compatibility problems if you use a conversion on top of that.
The keys swap perfectly fine between all T4x and R5x whether it is 14.1" or 15" ONLY if you have the same key switch on your versions of the keyboard.jeodavid wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:57 pmI may look in the future for a ide hdd for my other t42p. If you have missing keycaps, can you send a photo (attach as a link) of the key switch so we know what it is? Also what keys do you need? I might have some spares.
Windows 10 on your T43 will work but it is NOT usable! Your T43 has the Intel GMA integrated graphics and that has no compatible drivers for Windows 10! You need a T43 with ATi Radeon X300 or FireGL V3200 to have full functionality! I have such a 14.1" machine as spare too and has Windows 10 already installed, just it's not in the best shape. I don't need that anymore as it has since been replaced with a Latitude D610 that I got for free

As long as both keyboards are from the same manufacturer (NMB, Alps or Chicony) you can swap keys between 14.1 and 15 inch KBs.
The HMM will tell you which KB was made by whom.

Yah, I got the stuff from Amazon so I'll probably just return this crap...kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 12:37 amWell in my experience you should. Just to make sure, the same problem gonna happen if I put this set on the T42p right?
So I took at look on the back of my missing keys keyboard and I need the T and C. All the rest I think it's in working condition.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 12:37 amThe keys swap perfectly fine between all T4x and R5x whether it is 14.1" or 15" ONLY if you have the same key switch on your versions of the keyboard.

Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
Unfortunately no. A T42p will NOT START Windows 10 unless you go all the way out and stuff a Pentium M 7x0 CPU from T43 AND have a modded BIOS.
The reason why is the difference between Pentium M 7x5 and the Sonoma 533Mhz Pentium M 7x0 used is that the latter supports all the instruction sets such as PAE and NX that's required to run Windows 8 and above, while the T42 does NOT.
But what the T42p will do better at is that it will run Windows 7 with Windows Aero support, whereas a T43 with the integrated graphics do not have such capability. The T42p also supports DVI via the docking solutions, whereas the T43 you have do not.
Fortunately though, you have the NMB version of the keyboard, and I do happen to have a NMB keyboard also from 14.1" that's already missing lots of keys and have lots of broken switches that I can get you the specific keys that you need! I have the T and C keys, they have some wear but they will surely work.
Also, putting that adapter on T42p MIGHT work slightly better because T43 has a SATA to IDE converter circuit for its primary HDD slot whereas on the T42p it's native IDE.
That said don't expect anything more than 1-2 years of lifespan with such a cheap SSD that you might as well return it.
One of the kijiji sellers that I buy routinely is called bestbear sales, maybe see if they have a used name branded one that's gonna work far more reliably.

Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
So my CPU's are a Pentium® M Processor 755 and a Pentium® M Processor 740.
Right now I have the 755 on the T43.
I didn't know that either.
So my goal it's have the T42p with a Windows OS. If possible 10 or 8 in the worst case just 7.
In the T43 just a Linux OS for backup laptop and fun stuff.
What you think it's the best CPU for wich on?
That's OK for me 1 or 2 years on the T42p is good enough but I'll try 1st to make sure it's workable if not I'm going send that back cause I don't have any use for a msata..
I know bestbear really well I bought parts from them more than 3 times. They are like 30min from my place.

Re: T43 problem with a msata to pata upgrade on windows 7
So a Pentium M 755 on the T43 will also stop the T43 from even starting Windows 8 and above. I think the 755 should go to the T42 and the T43 have more CPU's like the 760 and 770 that will offer similar or faster experience at potentially cheaper prices.
You should use Windows 7 on T42p in this case. Windows 8 and above will not work whatsoever.
You can dm me about the keycaps but please make sure those keys still work if you push on the membrane before you fit them with proper rubber domes, keycaps and switches.
I am glad if that parts keyboard can help one more person.
