T42 internal modem

#1 Post by ziloo » Wed Feb 24, 2021 2:48 pm

Hello folks,

I have a T42 that has off and on problem with the router that is connected to;
When I boot the system, sometimes it detects the router right away, and sometimes
it doesn't find the wired or the wireless routers. I am running Win XP-SP3 ; when I
check the system directory, the internal modem and network adapters seem to be
working properly.

Any comment is highly appreciated.

What wireless adapter is installed?
What driver version is being used?
What access point are you connecting to?
Are you connecting using the 2.4 or 5.2 GHz radio?
Are you using a third party tool to manage wireless connections, or are you using the built-in Windows Wireless Zero config tool?

I would remove the modem card permanently.
If it is a BT/modem, disconnect its modem cable and keep only the bluetooth antenna connected.
I'd also remove the wifi-card if you are connected to your router via ethernet cable.
If you need wifi, look for a TP-Link TL-WN861N 300Mbps wifi-N card.

Thank you "RealBlack"...

Would you please elaborate on these items you mentioned!
Without the modem card, wifi card...?
Does n'i it need the internal modem for internet connection?

Modem is for 'antique' dial-up internet, uses a removable card (and telephone cable).
Wifi is for wireless internet, uses a removable card (and antenna wires).
Ethernet is for wired internet, part of the motherboard, uses a cable to the router.
You use only one of those at a time.

Thank you "RealBlack"...

Does it look like I have all the right drivers?

Do you think the modem/wifi are interfering with the Ethernet?

I'm more inclined to think that the WiFi card is starting to die, given its age.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch

Disable the wireless card under the Device Manager.

Restart the system with the ethernet cable plugged into the router.

Report back.

Alright boss,

I tried to disable (Do Not Use This Device) the wifi card,
namely the "wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter" in the Device Manager;
however I got the "hour glass" on the screen staring at me :twisted: and
nothing happened. I could n't disable the card!

The more you post the more I tend to believe that your issue is software - as in Windows - and not hardware...

By the way ajkula66,
A friend of mine has offered me a X200 for sale;
What is your opinion of X200s that you abuse daily?

I love mine. Light machine with a spectacular - for its age - battery life. Still an ideal "on the go" system for my needs.

X200 will most likely give you a webcam - which my "s" doesn't have - a lower resolution screen and a standard CPU. Still not a bad unit if you can live with 1280x800 LCD.
