[T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
Hi,
I have a T42 and the replicator ibm 2878, what is the FRU for a floppy drive that connects to the replicator.
Or, can a usb floppy drive boot on the thinkpad T42?
if i don't have the key to unlock or lock the replicator, will it work?
If I put the T42 laptop on the holder, I will not be able to remove my laptop T42 if I do not have the key for the security lock key?
Thanks for your help.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
I don't know the FRU for the proprietary drive, but the T42 should boot just fine from a USB floppy.
If the port replicator is in the unlocked position, you can connect and disconnect the laptop without problems. However if it is locked, and you don't have the key, then you will not be able to use it (unless you disassemble or break the lock).

I'm still trying to find a floppy drive that connects to the IBM 2878 dock but I can't find the model,
is there someone on the forum who has the IBM 2878 dock and a floppy drive connected on this one ?

Maybe some info here would be useful:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Floppy_Connector#17_mm
Maybe FRU 84G8663?
Another option would be an UltraSlimBay floppy:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraslimBay_Floppy_Drive
inside an enclosure:
Black IBM logo: FRU P/N 05K6187; ASM P/N 05K5907.
Blue IBM logo: FRU P/N 05K2643; ASM P/N 05K8805.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
I have already seen this model but it is nowhere indicated that it works with the IBM 2878,
and in the documentation of the IBM 2878, it is nowhere written whether this connector is 17mm or 21mm.
I will look for this information to see if I find a lead

I have a number of these port replicators, and I just used the Ultraslimbay external floppy drive and it works perfectly fine.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
I am using a case (FRU P/N 05K6187) with an Ultrabay Slim Floppy drive in it (FRU P/N 05K8874). The floppy does not fit into the T42 Ultrabay because it has the newer SATA connector, but it works fine via the case attached to the dock.
USB drives mostly work fine: The BIOS has support for booting. I think they do not work with Windows 95, and Windows 98 SE needs a driver. Also, USB drives do not support the XDF formats that were used sometimes in OS/2.

@andromeda92: If you need a replacement key for your locked port replicator / docking station, this is one resource:
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/soluti ... ical-docks
They can be ordered from IT Xchange for around US$20 or so. You will need the lock code which is printed on a black and white barcode label near the lock; typically on the bottom side of the dock. If the label is missing, then I think you're out of luck with ordering from IT Xchange.

I would rather get a more modern one, something like this: https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/sa ... es-7025315 (get it from a supplier close to you, of course; This is just where I bought it from)andromeda92 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 11:34 amthank you for your info, so I will orient myself on the models that you offer me.

Most of the USB Floppies do not support 720k diskettes, only 1.44MB. The one above does support them, though.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
Thanks for the link. I also saw near my home, an IBM N533 FD_05PUB 05K9283 reader,
they are very good, I have one but no IBM brand, it recognizes 720kb and 1.44mn under win98,
win2000, winxp, windows7 and windows 10 and linux. the one I currently have,
I will still test it because I will receive my ibm T42 tomorrow.
for ultraslim bay floppy and case (05K6187 and 05K8874) is difficult for me to find because i am in france,
it's to expensive because i need to buy from US, Taxe + charge + price 120$ to 150$.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
Interesting, in Switzerland these come up quite often in auctions. I got mine for 5 Swiss Francs. Right now this guy sells 4 pieces for 15 Francs, without the case though: https://www.ricardo.ch/de/a/ibm-thinkpa ... 159462590/
He also sells one case for 3 Francs. Unfortunately this auction site does not deliver outside of Switzerland, but I guess you could ask him directly.
Edit: The FRU numbers are different, so probably not a good fit for the T42.

I also wanted to know:
for the ram I am not obliged to take the IBM brand, I can take any brand provided that the models are PC2700 333Mhz 200 pin sodimm?
For the disk hdd also I can take any 44 pin 2.5 "disc or do I need the IBM brand?
Otherwise, I would like to put a 44 pin IDE CF Card adapter, I have one but the problem is that the connector location on the laptop is deep to insert it, there is no adapter that goes directly instead of the hard drive? it will be easier to change CF card
in all my other motherboards 486 or pentium I put compact flash, it allows me to change system quickly, win98, XP, linux, dos 6.22 ...

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
That's an ultraslimbay, not an ultrabay slim. that's the one on your T42, and those don't support floppy because the interface is literally just a propietrary IDE connector so it has no floppy signals on it. But the T42 has an integrated floppy controller that will only work with the floppy connector on the port replicator and docks and the Ultrabay 2000 in the dock II.tinue wrote: ↑Thu Apr 22, 2021 12:44 amI am using a case (FRU P/N 05K6187) with an Ultrabay Slim Floppy drive in it (FRU P/N 05K8874). Have you tried USB emulation if that's available on the BIOS? On a Latitude D series, the built in floppy drives are all USB based so that option can make it look like a native floppy drive.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
RAM: I have 6 different sticks with an IBM FRU number on them, but they are all from different factories (Samsung, Netlist, Hynix, Elpida, Infineon, and Micron). So I guess you are fine with any brand, as long as it has the specs that you mentioned.andromeda92 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 10:57 amI also wanted to know:

Disk: Any disk will do, as long as it is not too thick. I found cheap brand new Samsung HM160HC in China on Ebay that work perfectly. Also on eBay I found a vendor in Paris that sells the T42 drive cages. I now simply have multiple disks with cage that can be swapped out easily. Search for "New IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T40 T41 T42 T43 Laptop HDD Hard Drive Caddy & Cover". Total (Disk plus Caddy) was 17 Euro per piece.
Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
Yes, I have also seen this: There is no floppy that goes directly into the Ultraslim bay of the T42. Your explanation makes a lot of sense. My external case mimics an Ultrabay Slim, which is why such a floppy fits. And yes, the case can only be connected to a dock.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:23 amThat's an ultraslimbay, not an ultrabay slim. that's the one on your T42, and those don't support floppy because the interface is literally just a propietrary IDE connector so it has no floppy signals on it. The generic issue with USB floppies is that they are not floppies for the operating system. Fundamentally there is no difference between a USB floppy and an USB stick: They look like removable mass media to the OS. If one likes to play with old stuff such as non-standard sector formats (i.e. the XDF disks) then only a real floppy on a real controller will work. But for must uses cases a USB floppy is good enough.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
Hi,
If I put a second disc using the HDD adapter instead of the DVD (FRU 62P4553),
can I boot from this disc?
or do I have to remove the 1st disk to be able to boot on second disk ?
Thanks.

You can boot from it, without removing the primary drive.

I guess I have to use the F12 key to be able to tell it to boot from the second disk (ultraslim bay) ?

Yes, unless you change the BIOS default to always boot from the external drive first.

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
I have a problem with my HP N533 FD-05PUB USB floppy disk drive.
This reader works on all PCs and laptops, I can boot under DOS and win98 with the IBM T42.
When I boot under DOS with an external USB CF card reader, under dos it does not work, cannot access the floppy drive, but when I boot with the win98 boot floppy, it works, I can read the floppy.
This floppy drive work well on XP.
normally there is no need for drivers under dos because it works when I boot under dos 6.22 and windows98 with a floppy disk.
it is only from back on an external drive, in my case a CF CARD on an external USB CF Reader adapter
with my floppy drive usb i have this error
extended error 83.
if i take an IBM usb floppy drive will it work better?

Re: [T42] replicator IBM 2878 and floppy drive
A USB floppy drive is after all a USB device, and needs USB support in the operating system. DOS 6.22 does not have USB support, and I am not sure how generic the Windows 98 support is. It might just support a mouse / keyboard, for example.
The reason it works if you boot from the floppy is that the BIOS adds some sort of emulation. For the OS the floppy now looks like a regular, old style floppy drive and it is accessed through BIOS.
From what you observe, it appears that this support is only activated if you boot from the floppy.
What you could try is to disable the "Legacy Floppy Drives" support. This would be for a floppy connected to the docking station, which you don't have. Maybe the BIOS then routes floppy commands to the USB floppy even if you did not boot from it.
The IBM floppy will not change anything, because it is still a USB device.
