LCD panel swap T41p -- "Do not touch white tape" Any health hazard?

#1 Post by ann269_21 » Fri Apr 30, 2021 5:21 pm

Dear All,

I have two T41P, one bricked which I have been able to dismantle,
the other still working but impossible at the moment to dismantle for several blocked screws.
Since the working one has a dimmed LCD panel I decided to attempt to put in it the one of the bricked one which is better, following this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxXSm3wQp4E

I reached the panel:
Now I read: "Do not touch the white sensitive tape"

Is then any hazard? (For skin or whatever?)
I may have touched a bit it while trying to take it off, just stopped when I reached the back and read the sentence.
I don't care if I may have damaged the panel, just want to be sure there is any health related hazard and how (and if) to go on with the project.

thanks a lot,
A

There isn't any hazard for your body to touch that tape. But the reason why that tape is there is because there are lots of extremely fragile ribbon cables that reach from the crystal layer of the LCD to the controller board. They are of the strength of pasta. If one trace gets ripped, you start to have lines on the screen.
But what you don't wanna touch is the inverter board located in the bottom that's surrounded by usually clear tape while the computer is switched on (and in the case of T4x, it has your status LEDs on it). Touching that could give you a very nasty electrical shock.

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. I was reading some mercury-related stuff and getting worried.

As for the "white tape". Everything looks white on the back.
Can you explain to me, by the image at 3'55, in the linked video, which is the delicate part?

As for the inverter: is this dangerous even in a dismantle lid?
For the one not dismantle, is it enough to take off the battery and power cable?

Ok, I see the answer to my additional question is already in your message (while the laptop is on).
So operating while off (no battery pack, no power cable) should be safe.

Thanks again.
