Unable to Hibernate/Suspend T41

#1 Post by Puttagee » Thu Jul 14, 2005 7:35 pm

Hi All,
Hope someone can help me with my problem, when ever I try to hibernate I get the following message:
The device driver for the '11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again.

I tried the following with no success:
- closed all application
- closed as many processes possible
- used the Software Installer to update all drivers/programs

Thanks
Putts

Something to try. Open: ThinkPad Configuration > Power Management > Advanced Settings. Is the 'PCI BUS Power Management' set to Automatic?

Yes it is.

are you on a vpn? that will typically prevent sleep/hibernation.

I do use Symantec's VPN Client but it's always disconnected before I try to hibernate.

I'm not too sure this will help, but there are settings in the BIOS for the wireless lan adapter. Maybe one or more of these settings need to be changed. For instance: Wake on LAN.

I already checked the BIOS settings and found nothing that I think would affect hibernation.

Which drivers and driver versions are you using? Are you using Access Connections (version ?), or something else?

Check out the tools referred to in this thread:

The drivers were all installed via IBM's Software Installer. Currently using driver version 4.0.100.140 for the wireless lan adapter. Yes I am using Access Connections v. 3.71.

It seems if I disable this adapter hibernation works?

I haven't used Hibernation, but I have no problems with Standby. I also use IBM Access Connections 3.71, so I doubt if that's your problem. You have a different wireless adapter than I have, with different drivers.

Try going to Start > Connect To > Show all connections. Right click on your wireless adapter, and choose 'Disable'. Now see if it will go into Hibernation. If that works, it's probably your wireless driver or a service such as Zero Configuration Service that's preventing Hibernation. You could try uninstalling the wireless adapter, then reinstall the drivers for that device. Or perhaps there are other drivers somewhere that would solve the issue.

Another thing you can look at is: go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. You may see something there that is informative. While online, you can click on any error messages to get more info from microsoft.com.

If I disable the wireless adapter Hibernation works. Every time IBM issues a new driver I tried it but no success.
As for the Event Viewer an error is appearing, I will try doing a search on it to get more information.

Ok, I uninstalled then re-installed the wireless adapter driver and it work. I was having the same problem with the ethernet adapter so it enabled that one and when I tried to hiberdate I got the same message for the ethernet??? I uninstalled then re-installed the ethernet adapter driver and now I'm back to square one, I don't use the ethernet adapter that much so I disabled it, re-installed the wireless adapter driver and hibernation works again. I guess these two adapters just can't work together.

Following the tip I gave you above, you can disable or enable the adapters according to your needs. You should not have to reinstall the drivers for this to work. Admittedly, this is a little clunky, but I guess it's a workaround for you, until you find something better.

I finally figured out what is causing my problem, it has to do with the VPN client software. I just reloaded Windows from scratch, just upgraded my hard drive, after I installed each program I tried to Hibernate. It failed after installing the Symantec Enterprise VPN Client. I will contact Symantec to see what can be done.
