external LCD rotation

I just bought a Dell 24" UltraSharp wide screen LCD pannel attached to my T42 mini dock DVI port. My T42 has ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64MB memory. I was not able to find a way to rotate Windows XP screen when I turned the pannel vertically. I was trying to use iRotate (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Vide ... tate.shtml) and it says that I don't have the driver supports the rotation. Anyone knows if there is any version of the ATI driver supports it? Or how do I tweak it and make it work. many thanks.

perhaps the generic ATI driver that others use (with a hack) to achieve 1200x1600 via the DVI port..?

where can I find the generic ATI driver with a hack? thanks!! my screen size is 1920 x 1200. it's so nice.

The Portrait displays drivers are OK. (Can't watch video when rotated, but otherwise works.) http://www.portrait.com/

Of course, the'll only do the resolutions supported by the current driver (so you'll be at 1200x1600 or 1600x1200).

I haven't tried the ATI driver...

I got everything works.

This is what I have done.
1. download the newest driver from ATI (Mobility Radeon 9600)
2. download the hack from Patje's Mobility Modding (http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/)
3. download the FREE screen rotation utility (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Vide ... tate.shtml)

Everything is working together nicely. The only thing I haven't gotten it worked is that I couldn't get the dual screen worked by using IBM's Presentation Director. The max resolution I can setup is 1600 x 1200 from that utility.

Can you get dual display working from the normal Windows display settings dialogs?

Also, are you connecting via DVI or the analog VGA output?

Do movies (e.g., Windows Media Player) play in rotated mode, or do they still appear as though the monitor isn't rotated?

Yes, I can get dual display working from the normal Windows display settings dialogs but I cannot make my external display as the primary dispaly. I'm connecting via DVI output and movies can be played in the roated mode. I am not able to set to right resolution via IBM's Presentation Director. Any clue?

I haven't found the support for portrait mode in Presentation Director to be very good with the regular drivers. (I haven't tried the other drivers yet -- need to backup before I take the plunge

I use the regular Windows dialogs to manually change resolution settings. It's a pain, but it seems to work OK.

Another program to try is "PivotPro"

I used it sucessfully with a 1600x1200 DVI LCD.

You have to remember that most of these packages are doing the full pixel translation in software, using a driver shim layer of some sort. They're slower than the native landscape support in the video card, which is why video looks slow and even scrolling large windows can be choppy.

I would expect that some native video drivers could do a better job of setting up the actual graphics rendering to be portrait.

Also, the cursor shape has to rotate when you move the mouse between displays. Some software handles this better than others.

I tried the listed steps and everything went smooth after picking the correct video drivers from ATI. Running Catalyst 5.7 now on my T40 like a charm, irotate to rotate the displays. My machine comes up with correct single display while standalone and correctly detects and rotates extended desktop while on the dock. Still have to check out battery life.
