DVD Writer for T40

i just bought a t40 on ebay for a nice price, but it is pretty naked and i would like to know some information from anyone knowledgable. after searching the web and ebay for a dvdrw im guessing that it isnt an option. so is an external drive the only way to write dvds for this laptop? also, what is the nature of the security chip on this thing? lastly, if i were to format this pc where should i go to get the software for its native functions? thank you in advance.

yep, i imagined thats where to get the software. thank you.

so is there such a thing as an internal slim dvdrw for t40p? or is an external drive the only option?

also, what is the nature of the security chip? it seems like thinkpads are the only things using this. what is it?

If your T40p has the same 9.5mm slot as the current T43/T43p, then the slim DVD Multi-Burner (made by Matshita/Panasonic) should work if you need to burn DVD's on the go. A quick call to IBM/Lenovo sales would confirm that your specific machine & bios would support this burner.

However, if you'll just be burning at home or work, I'd suggest a 5.25" external USB 2.0 inclosure and stuff it with your favorite full-size DVD-RW drive.

I've got a 16x BenQ 1620 that supports Dual-Layer that I picked up for $60 from newegg and it works great. I've seen the external enclosures for $20-$30, so the entire setup should run under $100.

This link will tell you a little about the security chip. Basically you need to download the IBM Client Security Software and install that before you can use the chip. There is a link on the page for downloading the software.

You could pick up a slim laptop drive and put it in case. They are a little more portable than an external desktop drive. I have a NEC ND-6500A in a USB powered external case. The 6500 is a good laptop drive with quality burns. You can pick up the NEC at NewEgg for around $100 and the case for $20-30 on ebay. ThinkPad burners are slow and expensive. Don't know why they haven't come out with something better, but they haven't. I have the modular battery for the bay.

Because there's nothing else available that will fit in the 9.5mm bay other than the present 2X M a t s u s h i t a offering!

I'll probably break down and buy an internal burner for one of my T series machines eventually, but in the interim I'm perfectly content to use an NEC 6500 in an external USB2.0 housing, or the NEC 6500 in my T30. Haven't made a coaster yet with the 6500 using Nero, great drive.

You'd think with all the people seeming to want a faster better burner, they come out with one in the 9.5mm size. I had the UJ-812. It was very picky on media, would not burn any media that is not 2x which is getting harder to find and the burn quality wasn't that great. The 6500 es muy bueno.
