Upgrade T41 (Banias) up to Dothan...possible?

#1 Post by GoyoNeuff » Thu Jun 24, 2004 7:07 am

Hi All! :D

Since T41 2379DJU and T42 2378FVU only differences are:

1. P-M 1.6 (Banias) vs P-M 735 (Dothan)
2. 32Mb ATI 9000 vs. 64Mb ATI 9600
3. Intel PRO/Wireless 2100B vs. Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG

What can and cannot upgrade here?

1.??? :?
2.??? :?
3. I think Intel wireless card can be upgrade

What do you guys think? :P

Well, I forgot...
4. Three year warranty T41 (2379DJU) vs. One year warranty T42 (2378FVU)

But this has nothing to be with the "real" question...

Why upgrading the video card is that hard?
ATI Mobility FireGL 9000 pin is compatible w/ ATI 7500, that's why IBM haven't change the motherboard to offer low-quality and high-quality graphics solution Thinkpad T40 and T41. ATI calls this FLEXFIT.

It's called 'soldering'... lol

The GPU is soldered to the motherboard. The pin compatible FlexFit is just meant to allow the manufacturers to keep the same design, but that doesn't mean they can't fix the GPU in place with solder.

GPUs NEVER use a socket, only the ultra high end desktop replacements offer replaceable video cards and even those are limiting. The GPU is soldered directly to the board.

OK, so not upgrade for Video... :( ...well, not at least without soldering and that stuff.

Well, and what about Banias for Dothan? :D

the latest bios should allow you to upgrade, and dont even think about unsoldering the video chip and soldering a new one in, i wont even start to go over why that isnt possible

According to a CNET interview with Intel's VP of Chips or something, lol, the Dothan and Banias are pin compatible and can be used in the same socket.

Well, that's great! So, later on I can upgrade to Dothan...altough, by that time we would have a "New" processor and chipset after Alviso solution.... ...
I hope this T41 2379DJU will work for me at least 3 or 4 years. It already arrived but I'm at my office, so I won't be able to take it before 6 pm today. I was asking all this stuff because maybe it is a good idea to get the T42 instead and later pay 150 for extra warranty.

I'd recommend the T42.

Much less hassle with upgrading the T41, and the T42 will last longer since it's basically the latest that's out now.

But it is true that for T41, with the latest bios it can also be upgraded to a 2.0 Mhz chip? :?:

I'm sure the T40 can be upgraded also. They all have the same chipset. The processor pins are the same too.

Oh yes...a whopping 2.0 MHz. :) Feel the speed of the 286! ;) I do think that the upgrade should be possible with a BIOS upgrade. From an electrical signalling standpoint, they are the same, so there shouldn't be any issues there. The BIOS upgrade is just allowing the BIOS to properly recognize the faster CPU.

But, as the new owner of a T42, I would have to say that the T42 is likely the way to go. I absolutely love mine.[/b]

I know it can up to a 1.8 cause i've tested, don't see why it would not go all the way up to 2.0.

It'll work. Check out this Intel site.

http://www.intel.com/performance/mobile ... onfigc.htm

Look under table 4. It says that they upgraded a T41p with a 1.7GHz Banias Processor to a Dothan 755 2.0GHz. The chipset (855PM) and BIOS are the same on both machines. There is no reason you can't do the upgrade.
