Intel or Thinkpad Wireless?

Two t43's.... 266875U with ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi Wireless II,
and the 266872U with intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
both are virtually the same price... and all other features are identacle as far as i can tell... (can someone confirm that!)

Which wireless is better, the Intel or the Thinkpad? Thanks.

better for battery life, I would venture to say intel

better performance, I would venture to say Thinkpad (Atheros-based)

My guess is that they are comparable in terms of both efficiency and performance.

When Intel first started making WiFi cards, the Intel cards were actually WORSE than third party ones. The original Intel 802.11b Centrino card was a piece of junk. That's why I opted in 2003 to get a ThinkPad without wireless and wait for the IBM a/b/g card

However, the Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG units are by all accounts excellent products with excellent drivers.

I would go with whatever is least expensive.

Don't get 2915ABG, it hates Linksys routers, and several other brands, also loves to scale back in speed for no apparent reason (2915ABG owner)

i think ill go with the 75u at this point.



p.s. to the author, do you plan to get a 9 cell, or slim bay battery, or both?

Sorry, that was pretty funny....now when you say "by all accounts" are you saying everyone's saying the 2200bg and 2915abg are the best with the most stable drivers in the world? Obviously you've never tried using either of them with a broadcom based AP (like the linksys wrt54g or dlink). The WRT54G being perhaps the most popular router/AP out for about a year, Intel still hasn't fixed issues its consumers have been having with regards to a stable connection. The latest 9.0.2 drivers have done a lot to help with this issue, but the Dell D610 that work gave me two weeks ago still seems to have issues every now and then.

The intel wifi solutions are okay, better for battery performance from reviews I've read but I haven't actually confirmed this. But you made me spit my coffee all over my monitor when you said the quoted text. Just do a simple search over at one of the notebook forums or broadbandreports or any techie forum, even this one, and I'm sure you'll find a few references to the 2200bg card and connection issues.

im planning on getting it for school, and since i keep hearing about the long fun shipping times, i think ill be ordering it this week (in hopes it arrives before the end of august).




p.s. does anyone know if the thinkpads have any way you could lock them to a desk using a cable or something (parents paranoid its going to be easily lifted from my room).

I plan to get the 6 cell (due to weight) and a Ultrabay slim battery also.

the 2668-75u starts out at 4.8lbs. how much weight would the 9 cell add (compared to using just the 6 cell)?



edit: i suppose i should ask, how does the "6 cell + slim bay" battery compare to the 9 cell?

Seeing as how the 6cell+slim bay more or less equals the capacity of the 9 cell, I would imagine it would have to add the same amount of weight, however, bear in mind that with the 9cell you have the optical drive's weight whereas you with the slim bay you replace the optical drive's weight.

wow, thanks for posting feco. ive seen the type of lock that they use for those things and never imagined that it could so easily be manipulated.
