T43 / P machine differences in palm rests and touchpad/mouse buttons

#1 Post by solidpro » Thu Jun 23, 2022 12:58 pm

Hi All

I have a couple of T4x machines - They're labelled T41p, T42 and T43p and all of them have a one piece plastic surround around the keyboard and incorporating a palm rest. I have some minor issues I need to deal with but I'm getting a bit confused because a lot of the T4x machines or parts I see listed show these machines with a split surround - the palmrest is a different piece of plastic. What am I missing here?

Also, despite whatever it is that I am missing, are the mouse buttons and touchpad parts the same on all T4x machines? I ask because one has a problem where none of the mouse buttons or touchpad work so I think it's either the ribbon or the whole assembly, but I can't tell if it has to be specific to this exact model or they're all the same...?

Thanks!

14" T4x machines have separate pieces for palmrest and keyboard bezel.
15" T4x machines (only T42/p and T43/p came in 15" form factor) have a single piece integrating both palmrest and keyboard bezel.

I expect touchpads are the same between the models, not sure if they differ between the 14" and 15" units.

Touchpad, button assembly and the ribbon themselves are the same as long as you match the ones with fingerprint vs the ones without, and the touchpad is the same to R5x as well, just the R5x touchpad ribbon cables are slightly longer and have an extra rubber grip glued onto the plug on the motherboard end to make sure the keyboard holds that connector in place when seated (they will fit on T4x if you remove the rugger grip but not the other way around afaik).
The mounting hardware may be slightly different between variant with fingerprint reader and the variant without, and maybe the 14.1" to 15" units, that I don't remember.
Also, be aware that some 14.1", 15" and the R5x palmrest screws are slightly different - there is a #2 screw for the bottom left corner of the palmrest for 14.1" T4x units that's not used on the 15" one, as well as the extra long bezel screws beside the hinges that's also not used on the 15" one (the 15" use standard #1 screw for the former and standard long screw for the latter). You will punch a hole through the palmrest if you mix the screws.
R5x palmrest screws are overall all longer.
