T42 : can run off AC without battery?

#1 Post by Ken » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:02 am

Hi,

I'm expecting a T42 (2373-CVU) and was wondering if it is possible to run it off the mains without a battery?

Thanks,

Ken

Perfectly reasonable - however I can't actually understand why you would want to.

On rare occasions we have brown/black outs - the fact that there is a battery in my T21, although it's sitting in it's dock and effectively running from the mains, prevents power loss and therefore problems with potential data loss.

The battery gauge shows the battery slowly losing it's charge, as any battery will, and at around 95% the charger will kick in and pump it up again. Li-ion batteries, from what I understand DO NOT LIKE the regular complete discharge that is advised for Ni-Cad and other batteries, and as such seem to be perfectly happy with little top-ups from time to time.

Naturally, I speak from personal experience, and this is MY choice based on threads from this forum left by people far more capable than I.

IBM lists a part number for a dummy battery 91P9719 - but I can't seem to order it from the parts page - maybe if you call.

This keeps dusk & grime out of the battery hole.

The manual with my X31 says that you need to discharge the battery every month, and before you use it for the first time. It details exactly how to turn off the hibernation/standby functions so that it will not only drain completely but turn itself off due to lack of juice.

that is very hard on a li-ion battery and has been proven to reduce the maximum charge capacity.   ibm needs to remove this "discharge cycling" info from their manuals. :?

Thanks for the responses.
To be honest, I was curious to know if it was possible :-)

When I did this with my battery, the capacity jumped from 42.60 (whr?) to 45.00 whr. Besides, if it dies within two years (IBM's original warranty period + MC extended warranty) and I say that I followed IBM's advice, i'll just get a new battery, right?
