Any cool mods for the t series?
Any cool mods for the t series?
Anyone care to share any mods they've done to their t-series thinkpad.
hmm lol @ pphilipko !
I think most people are quite happy with their thinkpads that they dont need to do any modifications. The only "mod" i have is using the ati tool to o/c the graphics card. other than that nothing. Just keep myself well stocked with KFC wipes to clean the beast every once in a while!
I wonder if anyone has let their thinkpad undergo a crazy paintjob like those you see on alienware / voodoopc's
Hey, that reminds me, i thought i heard a story ages ago about ibm bringing out different coloured thinkpads?

I just got my thinkpad but I already ordered a 8x10 vinyl inkjet printable sticker. I plan on using one of the professional photo printers at my work, and print out a high-res image on it (found on deviantart). Then I'm going to slap the sticker on the laptop's lid. The idea is to 1.) personalize it for kicks, 2.) Make it stand out & easily reconizable as mine.
I also want to put a Stuffbak label; just in case hell freezes over and I some how lose my laptop. If you don't put some kind of lost & found label, your chance of getting is back is virtually 0, where as with the label it's more like a 75%-80% chance of recovery. And I'm thinking if I password protect the hell out of my system & bios offer a reward insentive for a return, my chances of getting a lost or stolen laptop will be even higher.
That reminds me (and sorry to change subjects), if you enable the power-up & BIOS password, won't programs like CompuTrace be worthless?

T42 - 1.7GHz - 1GB - 60GB 72k - 1400x1050 - 14.1" - 32MB Radeon - DVD Burn - G/B/Blue/Finger.
If it has CompuTrace BIOS Edition, then it'll still work.
If it doesn't, then it won't, because the regular CompuTrace lies on the hard drive, which the BIOS won't get to without password(s).

I ditched the palmrest with touchpad and installed a plain one, making my T42p TrackPoint-only.

Re: Any cool mods for the t series?
I haven't done any modifications that radically altered this T40, but I did do more than a few things to 'tweak' it to my liking. It took a lot of time and effort, given that this was one of the first T40s made and not all the quirks were worked out yet.
(1) Used very thin packing foam to stabilize the right hand side of the keyboard. There was some flex here (that has since been eliminated - I checked on a friend's 14" T42 and it wasn't there). This was an extremely easy thing to do.
(2) Used very thin packing foam to prevent the battery from rattling. Yeah, I got a [censored] Sanyo battery that didn't fit all that well. But it's nice and snug now!
(3) Replaced touchpad palmrest with plain palmrest. After my T40 went to IBM for system board replacement, it came back with the palmrest horribly creaky. I was unable to get the palmrest back to normal, and the touchpad was all out of alignment. I got a plain palmrest, put some sticky foam over the HDD cage to eliminate some creaking, and it is mostly fine now.
(4) +256 MB RAM, +802.11a/b/g card. These were pretty much stock parts that I installed myself.
Edit! I forgot - a piece of the keyboard bezel on the left size cracked and fell off. I had to tape it back on with some packing tape

I'll add that I don't even sticker a ThinkPad.
If I've got a crappy Dell, I have to sticker it to detract from the giant "Dell" logo on there. I had a quite funny sticker that said "They can send me to college/but they can't make me think" on my Dell.
However, especially seeing as ThinkPads are black, a sticker on one would just look UGLY.
As for other mods on ThinkPads, I'd only do functional mods. Painting simply costs too much, and ruins the rubber coating that makes it so easy to grip the thing.

Re: Nushield
Quite true, but have your tried the nutshield? With the some heat concerns with some IBM thinkpads, it might be wise to invest in one of these.buildtuff wrote:A Nushield is the best mod for thinkpad LCDs!!

IF it were real, how would it be powered? USB? Glucose power?
Besides, wouldn't you get funny looks, as if you were browsing porn on your overheating ThinkPad?

I am looking for the plain palm rest as well for a T42p. Does anyone have a FRU?

I bought mine from a guy on this lst who switched to an X-series, not sure of the FRU.

The sad part is that I didn't need a nutshield for my Dell with a Pentium 4 (not Pentium 4-M, but a Pentium 4), but I DO need one for this thing if I've got it running at full speed. It's fine at 500MHz, but it's by FAR the hottest laptop I've ever owned at full speed.
