I had a nushield for a while (pics still up at http://www.pbase.com/kenn/webpics). The problem is all kinds of dust and grit got under it after just a day or two, and the glassy surface just made it all the more visible. Couldn't deal with continually cleaning it.

Besides the hardware components, I also want the software side, like desktop etc, to look more professional.

Just take a look at this screenshot:
http://www.intothespirit.com/?q=node/5

- wallpaper extracted from an active wallpaper somewhere from the ibm/lenovo site
- additional information visualized with samurize
- object dock for quick start of programs

edit: yeah, I already ordered 1gb ram... :)

Is that a drop in replacement ro did you have to commit some surgery?
I had to unscrew the side and back rails from my IBM DVD drive and attach them to the NEC drive (no mod needed to attach), and I had to cut an approximate 1/4" x 1" notch out of the lower right side of the NEC faceplate to match the cutout on the IBM faceplate, easy to do with a utility knife, boxcutter or single-edge razor blade.

Once that's done, the drive is a drop-in replacement.

...and its actually pretty easy to configure; just download samurize from www.samurize.com and let your imagination be the only limit :)
I also have a config with news (rss feeds) and weather information (config is for home use)

Somehow I missed your reply until today. Thank you for the info. Much appreciated.

I know how you feel about your T22!! I recently went from a 385XD to this T23. :-))

You might be able to fiind it on ebay. Otherwise, you can order it from IBM.

I believe this to be the replacement part for T40
IBM part# 91P8399.
You can Google for price listing I've seen it
for about $50.

started with a basic t41:

1) removed the eraser button.. cuz i prefer the touch pad (and apparently i'm the minority)

2) installed a bluetooth antenna and a bmdc card

3) upgraded my wifi to a/b/g

4) upgraded ram to 1.2 gigs

5) removed all ibm stickers and logos.. filled the palm rest sticker cutout with a picture of my girlfriend cut to match its shape.

6) got 2 extended batteries, and layed down a couple layers of duct tape on them to make them fit snugly.. (they are very floppy by default)

guess that's it. man i love my puter..
