Can I just delete my hiberfil.sys ?

hi everyone,

99.9% of the time i never hibernate my T42 (just suspend).

Can I just delete my hiberfil.sys ?
it's taking up 1 GB of my HDD, but i never hibernate it.

If i should not directly delete this hiberfil.sys then how should i get around to delete this (via control panel, etc.)?

If you disable Hibernation, the file will disappear. Go to the Screen Saver tab in Display Properties -> Power ->Hibernate -> uncheck the box.

Here's one way I found in Windows Help and Support (copied from same):

Determines whether the virtual memory pagefile is cleared when the system is shut down.

Virtual memory support uses a system pagefile to swap pages of memory to disk when they are not used. On a running system, this pagefile is opened exclusively by the operating system, and it is well protected. However, systems that are configured to allow booting to other operating systems might have to make sure that the system pagefile is wiped clean when this system shuts down. This ensures that sensitive information from process memory that might go into the pagefile is not available to an unauthorized user who manages to directly access the pagefile.

When this policy is enabled, it causes the system pagefile to be cleared upon clean shutdown. If you enable this security option, the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) is also zeroed out when hibernation is disabled on a portable computer system.

Default: Disabled.

As soon as I posted, I see that vageetasjn has a simpler and better solution.

I haven't used Hibernation, but the only thing I found in Help and Support, doing a quick search, is what I posted.

Problem solved


The hiberfil.sys file has been deleted by Windows, which I'll presume Windows can make another one when needed upon the next hibernation request.

Your presumption is correct, assuming you have the space for it. If you have your file manager open so you can see the hiberfil, when you uncheck it, you will see the file disappear from the file manager. Recheck the box and it will reappear.

ya its not biggy, all you have to do is enable or disable hibernation. if hibernation is enabled, windows makes a file (the file size will be the same as the ammount of ram on your thinkpad) and always have in the hd. when you go into hibernation, it writes ram to that file.


when it resumes, it reads from that file to ram.
