Can you fry pixels or do any damage running unsupported refresh rates?
anyone with any experience with this?

Going to 70, or 80, won't hurt it. But it won't do anything either. Theres absolutely no reason to change from 60. LCDs are not like CRTs, and don't rely on refresh rate for anything.
