t40p and the dreaded clicking fan

#1 Post by livejazz » Sat Jul 23, 2005 8:29 am

i just got my first thinkpad..and apart from a few issues with the wireless card, drivers, and hanging..it was ok.

But, the fan comes on a lot (it apparently has the latest bios), and by god..is this irritating.

I don't mind fans..but this one has this awful...change in tone. Some people call it clicking. Basically, every few seconds, the fan sounds like it is changing speed, and you get this weird change in tone.

Its actually much more annoying that a noisy fan...so anyone out there complaining about a t43..should maybe count themselves lucky.

From what i have read my only way out is to replace the fan..but even then, i don't know what to buy! and am not sure if it will solve the problem.

Or can I go backwards in bios? how could i do that..would it mean the fan is at least less likely to come on?

I know exactly what you mean, I suffered a long time because of the fan. The only solution is to exchange it with the M10 Long Fan (Part number 13R2657). You can look it up here: http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... 46474.html

Call IBM to order it, costs are about 20 bucks.

The M10 is much more quiet, no acceleration noise at all. Look for the Hardware Maintainence Manual to see how to exchange it (http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-46464). You will need a special screwdriver (TR7) for 2 screws. But it is not that difficult to exchange the fan. It is like exchanging the wireless card. One little hint: don't remove the pink cover of the new M10 fan, it is supposed to stay there.

and the result..after a couple of hours of messing with screws, bits and bobs, is my t40 is now showing all the signs of a

...quiet non pulsating fan.

to be honest, i try to put my ear next to it, and listen, but i can hear my heart more loudly!

so, overall, that is one issue dealt with.

my other ongoing problem, is the random hanging..for a few seconds. the whole laptop, just stops for a few seconds, then starts again. i think its wireless connected. it has a new 802.11 g wireless card.

additional note:

the old fan looked pretty much identical to the new one.

so originally, the t40p, had a long fan, and it was very similar to the new m10 long fan that i just bought.

so, whatever is causing the pulsating, needs to be someone...probably in the fan housing itself, the bearings maybe.

when spinning the old fan, and new, the old...did not move as freely.
