Palm Rest - Black Things in Box Package

#1 Post by andyli » Sun Jul 24, 2005 10:48 pm

I had a new 15" palmrest assembly sent to me for my T42p.

In the box was 5 black things that look like squares with notched corners on two sides, sticky on one side (on 3M paper). Black and pretty stiff.

Does anyone know what these are for? I didn't see them in the HMM as part of the instructions.

They cover the screws on the underside of your palmrest.
You have to remove the existing covers to get at the screws to undo them.
Just look at the front underside of your TP and you should be able to see them.

I never had covers on the underside of my ThinkPad. Should I have them? If so, which ones should be covered? Those labled with "1" "2" or "3"? Or all of them?

The screw covers are only used on the the 14" models so i have no idea why they would be sending them out with the 15" palmrest. Probably just a packing issue.

I have a new 14" T42 that's never been opened, and there are no screw covers on it's underside. My old 600E did have screw covers. Just guessing here, but it seems to me that Lenovo is encouraging more user replacement of parts than IBM ever did. As such, having the screw heads exposed makes it easier for the end user to spot them. Anybody here, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong (as if you needed my permission  ).

Well, when I spoke to the IBM rep, he told me that the 15" palmrest is part of the assembly (the plastic surrounding the keyboard is one solid piece). He said that he would have to make an exception and noted that it was "requested and would be installed by customer" because normally they have the customer bring it in to the stores.

I guess that explains why I didn't have these screw covers to start. Would they work on the 15" inch? Would you recommend them?
