mandatory "i just bought my thinkpad!" thread

#1 Post by eigh » Mon Jul 25, 2005 3:49 pm

so as the title says, i just orderd a 2668-74u for college and am very happy!

unfortunately the shipping date has jumped up to 9/14/05, which doesnt make any sense. this morning i checked the site and it said 8/14/05. i know they are short on some centrino chipsets, but holy crap, a month and a half for my thinkpad?

by the time i physically get it, they will have 2.5ghz pent ms out!

fake edit: how long does it normally take to get from china to your doorstep (i live in michigan, dont know if that matters)?

along with this thinkpad, i plan to get 1gb more ram, a compact wireless router from newegg (the smalll 4" linksys one with b/g wireless), a bluetooth kensington mouse, and an external enclosure for a hard drive (that will act as a backup of my thinkpad contents). the items can be found here:

i hope this thinkpad pwns like all of you have convinced me it will. now i have to sit and wait a month while they melt sand down to make the silicon conponenets, grrrrrr!

I guess it depends if it gets held up in Customs or not, but mine went from billing info received in HK at 7:28AM, 5/24/05 to my business in Massachusetts at 10:21AM 5/25! I gotta figure the IDL plays a roll somewhere in that but 27 hours ain't too shabby. ;)

2.5 ghz out? Was that just a guess? Because last time I heard, Intel will only be releasing the 2.26 next week, and nothing more.

My T42 left KOWLOON BAY, HK on June 25th and arrived June 29th - and that was with regular free shipping.

My T43 (ordered July 5th) was supposed to ship mid august, but shipped yesterday July 25th!

So, don't despair -- you'll probably have your Thinkpad sooner then you think.

p.s. check out the image of KOWLOON BAY, HK on earth.google.com - very cool.

finally after about 4 weeks of wait, i got my T43 2687DDU, hence this post :) It is also the first time i had a real look at a 15" screen. the extra .9" does make a difference, especially if you are a programmer and use an IDE like visual studio/eclipse. the thing that most stands out is the build quality. I did not want a high end spec machine with por build quality like dell, I 'd rather settle for the balanced specs with good build quality, as a good solid laptop makes working on it a pleasure. everything about is rock solid. no squeaks or squeals, no movement in the hinges if you shake the machine. Did not notice the fan much except when i went to the library in the evening, but not too bad, can live with that that. my main concern was the heating(dell heating problem made me go black, i hope i never have to look back and ibm/lenove contiues to make good laptops), it infact it does heat, but not to semething unbearable, like my previous D600 latitude, but its too early to say.maybe i have become a bit extra sensitive to heat now, i guess heating in the plam rests is universal across all brands and makes of laptops. the keyboard is solid, no flex, whether its thai or chinese, did not bother to find out. myabe over the weekend would read someposts and try to find out what it is. overall i am happy with the machine so far. if i find anything worth sharing over the next few days would post it on this thread. Also if anyone wants to ask anything specific about the machine/model, just reply to the thread, would be following it regularly.

Congrats on your 2687DDU, VIK. I got mine about two weeks ago. I agree, its a great machine. The 15" screen is georgeous and the overall machine is very well-built, thin and light.

The fan noise not too bad, but I've found that using CHC enables really quiet operation.
