What kind of hard drive should I buy?

#1 Post by kidpaprika » Tue Jul 26, 2005 8:55 am

I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive in my T23 - need to upgrade from 20gb, maybe to 40gb, 60gb or even 80gb depending on pricing.

My question is, what kind of hard drive should I be looking for in terms of RPM etc if I'm going to get decent performance? I don't want the machine to run all slowly.

Thanks in advance.

A lot of people of this message board really like their 7200rpm drives, but they are kind of pricey. I think the 5400rpm is the best bang for the buck. I personally chose the 60gb Hitachi 5k100. It has very good specs. Buy from Newegg or ZipZoomFly, they have a good selection and great prices.

toshiba makes a 60gb 16mb cache drive that doesnt use any more juice than the 4200rpm drives. its whisper quiet too.
it has served me well.
MK6022GAX is the pt #

here's SS05 HD Bench.

I'd be curious to see how other drives, especially the 7200rpm perform comparitively.

Hitatchi 7K60. It's widely regarded as the best mobile drive currently available, and has been for over a year.

Can someone run a benchmark on this drive for comparison?

I have to say the 7200 rpm hd is the way to go. I can honestly say my T40 is about as fast if not faster than my desktop(s) that run a P4 2.8ghz HT processor and 7200 rpm hd's.
If you are on a budget, then of course go with the 5400 rpm hd.

I would say a 60-80gb 5K100 (5400rpm) or 7K100 (7200rpm) Hitachi drive. The 60gb version of the 7K100 has seen some initial availability. Though you do pay a premium for 7200rpm and if you do not use your laptop for intensive tasks a 5K100 (almost 10% faster than previous gen 5K80) would do fine.

definitely a 7k60 drive. i can really "feel" the difference between the 7200rpm on my thinkpad and the 5400rpm on my girlfriend's dell.
5400rpm is really a bottleneck (unless you got a really old celeron cpu or whatever)

Hi
Sorry, I don't have anything to run benchmarks with but I can guarantee that you will be satisfied if you get the 7200 rpm drive.
