other than the viewing angle, I like the 14" form factor better.
I don't have my T41p with me, but there were differences in viewing angles among the different t41p's made in May and June. 3 of them had great viewing angles while the others were horrible. I'll remember to angle my T41p like that to see if the angle is ok.

Good job Kano! Excelllent pictures. Thanks. That T42p is really a huge beast, but has really nice viewing angles. I still prefer the 14" model though.

Kano,
Excellent pics. That second to last picture really demonstrates the backlighting washing out the screen on the 14" models. And the superior viewing angles are quite evident on the 15" model. Glad you have these pics up, as I have a hard time describing the differences, as I've seen both side-by-side in person as well.
Daniel
P.S. Happy birthday to you, or whoever that item is for in one of those pics... lol

Kano,
Great pictures! I have the 14" myself and love it, but I was curious what the 15" looked like. I'll still stick to my 14" though, I don't like lugging a 15

IBM ThinkPad T42 (2378-FVU), 14.1" SXGA, ATI 9600, 512MB, 40GB, DVD-ROM/CDRW, 6 cell and 9 cell battery, Waterfield bag (sfbags.com)
Yes really good pics indeed.
Once thing I find interesting though is the pictures under the '2. Colors' section, showing both machines side-by-side under normal viewing angles (we all know that the big advantage of the flexview lies in the extended viewing range but normally, you'd be sitting in front of your TP, wouldn't you
Anyway, I thought that the non-flexview 14" has better contrast (maybe it's just a setting thing). I find this particularly visible on the last picture http://cfs.umbi.umd.edu/present/thinkpad6.jpg
I've ordered a 14" too (a 2373-KTU) and I'm really happy about its general form factor. These pics also make me think that I won't be regretting the flexview too much either
Cheers all and thanks for the pics kano!

sure?
I don't know csarrasin!
If a see http://cfs.umbi.umd.edu/present/thinkpad6a.jpg the dark areas of the wood of the trees are much more defined on Flexview than the more blury 14".
But only people that have in front of their eyes both screens can tell us how different they are....

X220t IPS but but a bit unhappy with it
T60p 2007-93U 1600x1200 IPS (T42p is an overall better machine though. Lack of new IPS Thinkpads keeps me buying these older models!)
T42p 2373-KXU 1600x1200 IPS (The best ever!!)
A20p 2629-6UU 1400x1050 (My first Thinkpad!)

The contrast on both screens is similar. The difference on picture 6 is made by deeper blue color on 14" non-flexview. In 15", background is more blue-grey.csarrasin wrote:Yes really good pics indeed.

Kano, sorry to trouble you but would it be possible for you to take a picture of your 14.1" laptop similar to the one at
http://www.vibrahost.com/imagehost/uploads/gap1.jpg
I just want to see how that gap compares to yours.

WHy is everyone calling the T42p a beast. Is it because you all are used to the T40 and 41s with the 14 inch screens? I went to the compusa and saw only one 14 inch screen laptop available. I ask the guy at the store was this odd. He said the standard is 15 inches now. The small ones he has were mainyl the ultra portables. Or a tablet.

Thanks for the excellent pics - however this only goes to show how LITTLE difference there is between the two screen sizes. Sure, the 15" will weigh a little more, but I really can't get my head around why people seem to consider the 15" T42 such an ENORMOUS BEAST?
I've been using a 15" HP which is very heavy, but I really come to appreciate the larger screen - for this very reason I ordered a 2373-CWU (arriving Monday) and for the life of me, even comparing the weights etc. etc. I still think the 15" IBM a perfectly reasonable size.
OK I realise I'm probably in a minority of one - but I'm used to this.

I don't think the 15" T42p is a beast. According to IBM it's 5.8 lbs, which is lighter than my old Dell Latitude CPi (6.2 lbs and only a 13" screen).
Under 6 lbs for a machine with a high-res screen is very good. Now widescreen notebooks like the Dell Latitude D800 are more "beastly"

Re: sure?
That wallpaper is on every WinXP. I looked at it on my T41p, and the pic is small, like 800x600 or smaller. When it is viewed full screen, it is quite streched, and the pic is grainy obviuosly. However, without any color mods, I would say my T41p looks more like the T42p's 15" screen, with the leafs having simliar color (more orange yellow rather than reddish), and the contrast of the tree bark in the dark quite nicely displayed.edelrc wrote:I don't know csarrasin!

On the IBM wallpaper, mt T41p is also more like the 15" screen. I think viewing angle will affect the 14" much more, and so maybe the diff is just that. That pic of the ibm wallpaper has the lcd at a more inclined angle (look at the KB for reference).
Of course, looking from my screen directly, it looks better than both of those machines on the jpeg. I guess you really have to look at it in person to be sure.
The comparison for the viewing angles are very useful though. It is quite accurtate for the 14". The vertical veiwing angle is poor, esp from above the horizontal.
The 15" may not be a beast next to my Inspiron 8200, but it is a bit thicker and heavier than the 14".
I kinda like having the extra screen space, but after the Inspiron, I just want something smaller. I couldn't go down to the size/performance of the x, though.
A 15" screen is hard to unfold on an airplane, too.

Is this 15" the same as mine?
I just purchased a 2378EYU - T42 Pent M 1.8GHZ 15SXGA+ IPS 64VID CTO.
Are these the same 15" screens? Sorry for my ignorance, and thanks for your time.

Switched my 15" for a 14"
I was from the people that were very excited when the 15" screen came out - I was always envious of my freinds that had a bigger screen then my T30 (the worst IBM in the T series IMO) - So I jumped on one right away however I found that it does not have the appeal of my the smaller 14" t40. So I ebayed it and orderd the 14" 23733uu and I could not be happier. BIGGER is not always better. If you are used of the T20 or T40 14" make sure you see a 15" before you buy one. Also the 14" being just 4.5 pounds is the same weight as many other 12" ultra portables (obviously not the unmatched x40 - rather the ones from Dell and HP). Just my 2c.

just my 2c:
I ordered a 14.1" T42P because I wanted to have a small & light notebook. I even thought about the 12" X-series but ended with the T42P 2373GXG. From my point of view even the 14.1" isn't really "small". I really can't stand bigger notebooks. I am the one who has to carry it around. If it's much bigger I'd take a nice (cheap) barebone PC and glue a 15" TFT onto the case.
----------------
I can't open the pictures. I get time-out errors.

Vasant, I believe the two models being compared in this thread have SXGA+ resolution. So, you can see the size of the desktop icons and bar at the bottom. These pics won't show you the size of text in something like MS Word, though. Maybe you can ask Kano nicely for some additional pics ...could someone post some hi rez pics of the 14.1 SXGA and 15 SXGA screens? I want to see what the view will be like, and how small the letters and stuff do.
~ Actually, I was wrong about the 15" model. That should be a UXGA screen, if anyone was wondering. Sorry about that.
