Do I need a driver to use a CD-RW drive on T20?

#1 Post by plagenz » Wed Jul 27, 2005 4:33 pm

Hi, I want to use an UltraBay CD-RW drive (kyushu M a t s u s h i t a ujda310v-bm) on a T20 running Windows 98.

Can I just insert the drive in the UltraBay, or do I need a driver for it? I couldn't find one in the T20 driver matrix.

Also, any suggestions for how to get CD burner software that will run on Windows 98 (not SE)?

Many thanks,
Joel

Windows should not need any extra drivers to burn CDs. CDBurnerXP supports Windows 98, is free and works quite well for basic burning tasks like making data and audio CDs. Good Luck.

You don't need any drivers to use the drive, it will be auto-detected and anything needed will be installed from the .INF files.

You will need a 3rd party CD burning program for Win98, ME and Win2k. I like Nero.

That's what I said. Windows uses cdrom.inf which comes when you install Windows.

I agree Nero is better at certain tasks than CDBurnerXP like converting .mp3s on the fly, but CDBurnerXP is free and works well although you can probably pick up an OEM copy Nero on eBay for $10 or less. Good Luck.

I second that. :D

I slipstreamed a Windows XP Pro CD a few months back, and Nero was the only program I had that would do it. My desktop PC had a more recent version of Roxio than what I had of Nero, but it would not creat a bootable CD. Likewise, my T42 that came factory loaded with Sonic's Record Now would not creat a bootable CD (even though it said it would). I had to use my old 600E which had a copy of Nero that was about 2-years old to make my slipstreamed CD. I couldn't believe all the options available for creating different types of CD's in Nero.
