upgrading a t42 machines hard drive

#1 Post by milesrbruce » Wed Jul 27, 2005 11:35 pm

I owuld like to purchase a t42 (23733UU) from IBM site and have the hard drive changed from the 40 GIG 5400 HD to a 60 gig 7200 drive.

Can this be done? Can this be done when the machine is ordered from IBM?

Let me know if anyone has an idea.

It sure can be done, but it probably isn't possible during order I don't think. If you can't change it in the customization area right before adding it to the cart, you just can't have it done on order. But you can do it yourself with just a screwdriver, and it is pretty easy to do given that you buy the right drive. You can buy that excellent drive online by searching for a Hitachi 7k60 or E7k60 (E indicates extended use, or heavier duty). CNet has a great tutorial if you rummage through the weekend project area (there are not that many, so it should be easy to find). You will want to call IBM and ask for a set of system restoration disks (They arent included or provided without request afterwards) so you can install everything on the new drive.
