Considering a T43...

#1 Post by HamTard » Fri Jul 29, 2005 1:21 pm

Hey, I currently only have a desktop with the specs:

P4 1.8GHz 2mb L2 Cache
Windows XP Pro
386mb SDRAM
GeForce 2 MX 32mb
40GB HDD
CD-RW
4 USB 1.1 Ports
19" ViewSonic PerfectFlat CRT Monitor

I'm looking for a notebook computer to use for at least 3 years, or however long it takes for Intel to produce a dual-core AND 64-bit Pentium-M (or whatever they choose to call it) for notebooks.

I'm considering a T43 (2686DGU) under the Canadian EPP

FREE "Microsoft Office Professional, Double the Standard Memory, Expander Carrying Case"

Pentium-M 750 1.86GHz 2mb L2 Cache
Windows XP Pro
512MB DDR2 RAM (if i understand correctly, 1GB after the free doubling)
ATI Radeon X300 64mb
60GB 7200RPM HDD
CD-RW/DVD-R MultiBurner 4x Max
2 USB 2.0 Ports
14.1" TFT 1400x1050 FlexView

CDN $1998.00

I figure this notebook will be better than my 3 year old desktop, and be good enough to last me 3+ years doing basic word processing, spreadsheets, graphs, powerpoint presentations, web surfing, instant messaging, e-mail, and the occasional modern game (2003 onward) at 800x600 with low settings. I don't intend to play Doom 3, Farcry, or Battlefield 2, and the most intense gaming I will do is maybe a little Half-Life 2 on low settings, Halo 2 if it ever hits PC, Elderscrolls 4: Oblivion, and whatever offering Blizzard produces in the next 3 years for the PC.

I should note that I played Elderscrolls 3: Morrowind perfectly fine with default settings on my inferior PC with the GeForce 2 MX 32mb, so I suspect ES4: Oblivion will run on the T43 very well on low to medium settings. Halo for PC also ran perfectly at default settings on my desktop, so if Halo 2 ever hits PC, I suspect it should run fine on the T43 as well (I don't mind reducing settings for any games). If you know I am wrong about these games, tell me, they are the only 2 games I really want to play.

I'm going to wait until mid-August to order the T43, since I have been reading about everyone's T series being delayed because of part shipments not being in yet. I'm hoping that by mid-August things will be back to normal. I'm also hoping the bundles for the T43 will get better. Do you think it's a good idea to wait? I don't need the notebook by any specific date, but before the end of September is my preference.

I don't understand your thinking here. What have you got to lose by ordering now? You may receive it by the time you put your master plan into place by ordering in August to avoid delays :?

If I were you, I don't think I would wait. If you order now it may very well be delayed but it also may not. If you read any threads on this forum relating to ship dates, you'll see that uncertainty is the only constant. Some people have been waiting weeks or months while others have received their units within days.

Also if you order now, you're assured the memory doubling bundle. As far as I know, that particular bundle is not necessarily a sure thing and may not be offered if you order later. What is certain though is that once you get the machine, you have 30 days of price protection. in other words, if the price drops and you call IBM, they'll credit back the difference.

i live in the states, but i ordered 7/24, shipped 7/28, should arrive 8/4 or so. no super delay (and i was worried about it).

however, i would order it now to make sure you get that great deal on memory and the carrying case.

intel gonna release dual core in 2006 first quarter, why don't you just wait couple months more? And some AMD dual core laptops already on sell but very big tho.

because i don't want a 32bit dual core, i'm waiting for 64bit dual cores by Intel to come out, and Intel doesn't plan on releasing their Memrom 64bit mobile processor until 2007. A dual core version of that won't be out for some time after, and I'll probably not get it the moment it comes out, but wait like 6 months so they can work out the problems that arise with the new chipset, and possibly get a pricedrop too.

Reading slickdeals.net I noticed this same model is going for $1423.20 USD. Seems like a pretty good deal.

Go to: http://www.lenovo.com/think/products/us/en/

Notebooks, then T series

I live in Canada so I can't buy off the US site. The best deals are always US-Only, but the deal I found is pretty good for Canada.

I live in Canada too, let me tell you that as long as you have a US shipping address (or a friend) you CAN order off the US site (thats what I did) saved about 1100$)
