How long would you think a T43 would run a UPS with...

#1 Post by Navck » Fri Jul 29, 2005 8:52 pm

A cable modem, and a router with the wireless off?
On something like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6842102004
And if I had a cheaper UPS like this?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6842107109

Cable and router report to draw about 1AMP or so. Cable runs at 9 volt, router at 12.

I wonder, because it would be nice to do something when theres a blackout.
Also this is with stock voltages/Maximum battery mode

Well, from what I've seen posted about the AC adapters hot enough to fry an egg, I would say about 3 minutes.

Just kidding. I really don't know.

But if there was a blackout wouldn't the cable internet be down too? :?:
Then why would you need a cable modem and router?

Cable internet comes from the TV cable guys. Their power may be coming from a different location, that is not affected by the outage at your location. If you have power to your modem and router, theoretically at least, you may be able to go online during a power outage.

An even more certain way of keeping an internet connection available is to use cell phone technology. Either tether your phone to your computer by cable, bluetooth, or IR, or use a PC card cell modem. Alternatively use something like a TREO.

Correct, I did the finger + saliva test during that power outtage (I think they shut my area down specifically to keep the grid alive)
Lets just say I can feel the electricity.
I also know some cable companys have backup generators/UPS for their clients that also have backup generators/UPS

I'm wondering, if I run my T43 at minimal power usage (14 watts reported by Mobilemeter), how long would it last on those batterys?

1. easy, find out what the battery is rated at (normally rated in mah, or ah)
2. find out the voltage your thinkpad will drain
3. use P = I * V and find out how much current your thinkpad is draining (power = current * voltage)
4. devide the batteries rating by how much current you use, and you should find out how long it will last

5. are you sure your thinkpad runs off of 14w at minimal settings? that seems way too low.

(ill double check your numbers when i get mine next week :D

Eigh, thats with undervolting, screen brightness on minimal, harddrive stopped spinning (For a short while, that went to 10 Watts), and wireless off.

Lets see, 14 watt on Thinkpad (Assuming power adapter is 100% efficent enough not to draw more than that). And 23 + 18 from router/modem...
Thats a pretty low draw. (Compared to some other things such was my computer, eats 150 watts IDLE.

since i live in florida, land of tropical storms (and worse), lightening and power interruptions, i feel i can speak with some authority on this subject..

during the 19 days in september (2004) that i was without grid power, and since i have both ADSL and Cable modems, a BIG backup generator, many UPS's and so forth, i experienced all the probably variations of failures..

also, i live in the country rather than an urban area..

storm would come ashore, power would go, sometimes both telco and cable would go out at the same time, sometimes not..
later, cable and telco would power their repeaters, amplifiers and so forth with a generator..

so telephone and usually cable would reappear before grid power..
or not..

there are too many variables, in your basic question, that need to be sorted out before any kind of exact answer can be given..

if you live in an urbab area behind the police station or a fire house or hospital, your power will come back sooner..
along with telco and cable..
(telco and cable did NOT reappear at the same time for me, in sept. 04)

my biggest [censored] was that the generator (an 18 year old generac 20KW) would give the UPS's fits..
so i had to take all the UPS's out of service when on generator power..
which meant that everything came down when i powered the genset down for daily service..
(this is a reason i upgraded to a new generac 30KW, which does NOT give the UPS's fits :) )

for a quick answer to your question, i would say that if you get an el-cheapo UPS, 350VA or the like, for $35 each, they and your thinkpad should last for 2 hours.. long enough to deal with most power outages..

FWIW, here in florida, lightening capitol of the world, i scatter these 350VA unita all over for most things.. they are the size of a big plug strip and work very well..

This looks nice, pricetag doesn't

This is what you describe?
Also - I convinced a tech rep "finnally" that my TP has problems and I'll be getting a box to send it in.
