Hi Guys.
When I run Intervideo WINDVD v. 5, 7 or 8 on my T43 my "Total Pagefile Use" that is in Task Manager, under Performance, under Commit Charge (K) the total goes from the standard 247772 and jumps straight up too 947018 and it remains at that level until I exit Intervideo WINDVD where it proceeds to go back to normal in the 200k range.
Ive tried running Intervideo WINDVD 5,7 & 8 on my T23 notebook and everything is fine, the Commit Carge (K) total only goes up about 100k but with my T43 it jumps up 600+k!
Is this a memory leak? and does anyone know how I can resolve this? Im racking my brain trying to think of how to fix this.. because my T23 works fine im thinking it has to do with my T43 somehow, but Ive only running the standard setup with XP and service pack 2.
Also does anyone know if its dangerous to be running at such a high level all the time, that is 900k and upwards.. Although I am running 1GB ram and do have a Limit of 1732140 under Commit Charge (k)
Im worried that when I run DVD's and if in future I need to run more applications then Im gonna get bogged down because Im obviously using so much of my page file.
Or am I totally on the wrong track here? do those numbers mean anything when they jump up so high? Im assuming that, that is my memory being used.. and that the higher it goes the worse it is.. and the slower my computer will run its applications..
Anyone at all who can enlighten me and provide a solution would be extremely grateful, I love Intervideo WINDVD and dont want to have to switch to Cybersoft or anything..
Cheers

I am pretty sure that you are talking about the commit charge and not the pagefile; that is only the area on your HDD that can be used as system memory. The pagefile honestly does very little in terms of affecting performance in typical situations, and it will often be used to a large extent regardless of the amount of memory that you have. At 1Gb you really don't need to consider the pagefile that much.
But I am not exactly sure why WinDVD is causing memory use to increase by so much, it definitely should not be using anywhere near 900 Mb (I think you meant 900000K?), no DVD app should do that. It is even hard to imagine that a leak could be so large in this case. Verify whether or not this issue affects only WinDVD and not video playback in general. Also check for any malicious software. You need to isolate the issue first by checking each component being used, and make sure that the issue isn't broader (i.e. affecting video rendering).
There really is no notion of danger with memory units in basic usage. They are just silicon chips; you aren't concerned over the CPU needing to do a lot of processing just the same (I am not so sure about those 3.8GHz P4s
). Also, high memory use does not necessarily mean that there is a bunch of writing going on. Where you need to worry about damage lies in overclocking and its implication on temperature. Manufacturers would probably not tack lifetime guarantees on everything if high memory use caused damage.
