I just received my new T42 and am in process of setting it up. To answer a question I recently posed, the 80 GB hard disk it comes from, ends up with a C partition with 63.8 GB free out of 69.9 total space (I guess the rest is used by the hidden partition).
I made the Recovery Disks sucessfully, but now I have only 62.8 GB free space. In other words a full 1 GB of space is now gone from my remaining space.
Can anyone explain why this is -- and how do I get back this space? I already have the Recovery CD's made.
Before continuing with setting everything up, installing software, transferring data from old computer, etc. -- I'm planning to partition the disk with Partition Magic 8, since I like my data separate from the operating system.
But I want as much space on my usable part of the disk as possible before I do this.
Summary -- how do I get back that 1 GB of space which is gone after the Recovery CD was made ? (Will Tech Support be able to answer questions like this, or will they be useless ?)
Thanks.
New T42 C Partition Space Lost 1 GB After Recovery Disks!
I am not sure what happened to cause your loss of disk space, but two thoughts come to mind.
(1) Has your Windows page file grown in size? When you reboot, do you still show the 1 GB missing?
(2) Maybe you accumulated some temp files along the way. For each user you have setup on your laptop, go to Start > Run, and type in %temp% then press enter. A box should pop up with all your temp files. Select all the files and delete.

Thanks I'll try that a little later -- right now my new Thinkpad is not yet connected online so I'm on my old notebook.
As a related question, suppose I just want to get rid of all of that "hidden partition" space -- how could I go about doing that ? Even with an 80 GB disk, there's only 62.8 GB left, and I haven't even installed any of my software yet.
I'm really not happy that my new ThinkPad did not come with an actual Windows CD -- my old Dell did come with one, and I was able to install, partition etc. from the Windows CD.

I believe this thread will answer your question:
