opinions wanted on dvdr and hard drive change

#1 Post by gosha16 » Fri Jun 25, 2004 12:50 pm

i just got my 3VU and wanted some opinions. it has the 80gb 5400 rpm drive and the dvd burner. what would be your opions on swapping out the 80gb for the 60gb 7200 rpm drive? how much of a performance differance is there? when i upgraded from a 7200rpm ide drive in my desktop to a 10k scsi drive, i was blown away by the performance increase.

also, what is the differance in CD burn time between my dvd drive and a regular cdr/dvd combo drive? i dont think ill ever be burnign dvd's on this thing, maybe i should trade someone for a regular drive?

The CD-RW/DVD II drive in my 2378fvu has these specs:

Write speed [CD-R] : 4x CLV, 10x, 16x, 24x ZCLV
Write speed [CD-RW] : 4x,10x CLV
Read speed [CD] : 24x Max
Read speed [DVD] : 8x Max
Access Time[CD] : 110msec
Access Time[DVD] : 120msec
Data Transfer Rate[CD] : Max 3,600KB/s
Data Transfer Rate[DVD] : Max11,080KB/s
Buffer Size : 2MB with buffer under run prevention technology

All I can find on the DVD drive says "8X/24X Max". I know the DVD-R writing is 2X max, but I don't know what the other numbers mean. Does anyone have the M a t s u s h i t a part number off the DVD Multiburner?

Addendum:

I just called IBM to order the product recovery CDs for the T42 and the technician stopped and asked me if I had the DVD Multi-burner. I said no and he said that was interesting because my CD-RW/DVD combo drive is listed in the system as having a 24X/24X/24X/8X drive, meaning that it reads and writes Rs and RWs at 24X and reads DVDs at 8X. He said it's the first drive he's seen that has 24X on all CD access times, so the CD-RW/DVD II drive must be an improvement over the CD-RW/DVD drive.
