T30 is XPpro SP2 is FAT32 not NTFS

#1 Post by Ogg » Mon Aug 01, 2005 10:21 am

In the process of evaluating a T30, 2366-83u (setting it up with antivirus, firewall, etc..) ...I discovered that the file system was FAT32; well, atleast that is what DiskeeperLite is telling me. Is FAT32 normal for IBM-issued T30's? Or am I looking at a T30 that has most likely had XP reinstalled? The TP has cab files dating back to 2001 so I would assume that those are the originals sets. But knowing that there is no way to convert NTFS back to FAT32, it makes me wonder if FAT32 was the format out of the factory? Anyone here have thoughts on this? Should I attempt to convert to NTFS? What about the alignment issue discussed at http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.php ???

If you take a new T30 out the box and start it, it will convert to NTFS automatically. So something happened if it is still FAT. You can convert to NTFS with the CONVERT command in a terminal session. Open a command prompt and type CONVERT /? to see how it works. ... JD Hurst
