Need Help with Enabling Hot Swapping on a T21

#1 Post by mayidunk » Wed Aug 03, 2005 11:13 am

Hello,

I recently got a refurbed T21 (2647-8AU), without a recovery CD. So, I have been slowly reassembling the software environment, using a copy of Win98Se that I have, and whatever drivers I can get from Lenovo. So far, so good.

I DL'd and installed the hot swap driver, and while it seemed to install fine, it doesn't seem to want to stop my devices! When the floppy is in the bay, the STOP button is available for me to press, but I get no indication that the device has stopped, no matter how long I wait. (The sound notification is turned on...) When the CD/DVD ROM drive is in the bay, there's a red "X" over the icon in the tray, and the STOP button is greyed out! However, I am still able to use the drive in this condition, both for CDs and DVDs.

I tried searching around the forums, but no joy. Can anyone help me, as I'm sure it has to be an issue with how I did this. :?

I gotta tell you, I love this T21! As I have been slowly putting things back together, I am becoming more and more impressed with it! This is my forst TP, and also my first post in your forums (fora? :D ).

Thanks,
Bob

OK, maybe you like Win98,maybe you have licensing issues, but have you considered to install W2K or XP?
This OSes have native hot swap support, and is much more stable and reliable than Win98...
Just an option, of course.
If you slide the lever to remove the FDD/CD , machine still beeps?

Hi Eduardo,

No, I just had an extra copy of Win98SE and decided to use it. So far, I haven't had any other problems with 98.

No beep when I pull out the lever.

Thanks,
Bob

I was going to post the following, but I just now noticed in the readme file below, only Windows 2000 and XP are supported. You're probably out of luck with Windows 98SE, unless you can find an older driver on IBM/Lenovo's website.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure your embedded controller and BIOS are up to date. See the following that I copied from the EasyEject Utility installation readme file:

INSTALL:
1. Start
Windows 2000/XP. Logon with a User ID of Administrator.
2. Extract this package onto the hard drive.
3. Click 'Start' -> 'Run...'.
4. Type [Program Path]\SETUP, and click OK.
Program Path is the full path name where you extracted the package
in the step 2, and click OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

(Note)
*1 From Version 1.30, package structure was re-organized.
If you already installed "Utility package" for each operating
system, please uninstall it first before you install this package.
Then you need to install the following packages too.

- ThinkPad Configuration package
- ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features
package
- ThinkPad Presentation Director

*2 From Version 2.00, default installation folder name and modules to
be completely uninstalled were changed. If you already installed
previous version, you need to update all the following packages too.

- ThinkPad Configuration package
- ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features
package
- ThinkPad Presentation Director

*3 If you install newer version after uninstalling previous version,
reboot the system after uninstallation.

UNINSTALL:
Uninstallation is supported by Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
You have to logon with the user ID authorized as an administrator.

EDIT: Scratch the above, I was looking at the readme file for a T42. See next post.

It should work. Make sure your BIOS is up to date, and that you have installed the supplement files. All files are available at the
T20/T21 Device Driver Matrix page

Expand 'System Utilities File Matrix' to find the Ultrabay swap utility driver for Windows 95/98. See part of readme file below:

Installation instructions
-------------------------
NOTES:
- The ThinkPad Software Installer provides install and uninstall
wizards for this package.
- If a previous version is already installed, uninstall it first
using Add/Remove Programs.

To install this package manually:
1. Start Windows 95/98 (APM).
2. Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
4. Select Next, and then click No.
5. Select Other devices in the device selection menu.
6. Click the Have Disk button.
7. Select ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Hot/Warm Swap Driver with the
correct
path, and then click Next.
8. Click the Finish button to restart the operating system.

While it doesn't say it above, I would make sure you have ThinkPad Configuration, IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features package, and IBM ThinkPad Presentation Director (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP) installed first. See below from ThinkPad Configuration readme file.

Notes:

* If you have ThinkPad Configuration version 1.24a or earlier installed, uninstall it first and reboot before installing this package. Then install the following packages
o ThinkPad 5xx/i-1157 :
+ IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features package

o ThinkPad 6xx/7xx :
+ IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features package
+ IBM ThinkPad Personalization Editor

o Other ThinkPad machines :
+ IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features package
+ IBM ThinkPad Presentation Director (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP)
+ IBM ThinkPad Presentation Director (Windows 2000/XP)
+ IBM ThinkPad EasyEject Utility (Win2000/XP)

The Lenovo/IBM web site and file update instructions are rather vague. I recently did all of the TP updates on my T20 in both Win98SE and XP.

There are a couple of other files for Win98SE that may help.

IBM Ultrabay 2000 Hot Swap Driver 1.04

MS 1394 Storage Supplement ( Q24975 ? )

I was having some Ultrabay hot swapping problems a couple of years ago. I updated these files and it fixed the problem.

There's no icon in the tray in Win98SE. As soon as I release the drive removal lever, a window pops up in the lower right corner then a popup says that it's OK to remove the drive. When I replace a drive the same popups come up and say that it's OK.

Well, I broke down and bought the rescue/recovery disk from IBM, and I must admit that it is worth the price of admission! When I consider the amount of time and effort it would've taken to replicate the original drive image, the purchase just doesn't seem to be that much of an issue anymore. Aside from a few things that still need to be ironed out, I now have a fully functioning T21.

Thanks the advice and information, I appreciate it!

I just received my recovery CD this week, having ordered it last week. It's a Win2k Pro install! Talk about just under the wire!
