Max cpu for T-series (20-23's)

#1 Post by skygodtj » Sat Aug 06, 2005 4:34 pm

Hi all,

James, Bill,

I know you guys know the answer to this... what are the fastest cpu's avail and useable for each of the T-2x series? 20, 21, 22 and 23's? I have a 700mhz T20 I put a 900mhz micro-cpu with new thermal tape and gel and a -21/22 fan(noticeably beefier). It works, but runs very warm... 50-90C, peaks in the 80-90's(highest was 94) idles around 50C. The fan comes on -reeeeally- late in the temp climb, doesnt seem to switch on till its in the 70's, then shuts off abt 60. Can the trigger point be changed to come on sooner?

I also have a 1GHz T23 I put a 1.2GHz cpu in and it runs the same temp as the 1ghz setup, as BigBlue sold a 1.2ghz model. Are there faster chips for the -23's(than 1.2) I can bolt on and still run stable? Same with the lower T2x models. Do you have an idea what cpu's can be bolted into the 20, 21, 22, and 23's and run well(cool enuff).

You guys are the bees knees about these later models.. all my 'franken-pad' experiments are in 770/600 models

Thanks

TJ

One CPU speed limiting factor on the T20 and T21 TPs is the onboard voltage regulator capacities. The PIII M 650, 700, 750, 800 and 850 CPUs run at 1.6/1.35V while the PIII M 900, 950 & 1000 CPUs run at 1.7/1.35V.

This may or may not create a problem in the T2x TPs. There were some issues with this when overclocking the older Socket7 and Super Socket7 desktop motherboards.

Here's a link with a breakdown on the PIII M CPUs up to 1G:

http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/Mobile%2 ... 20III.html

BTW, T2x TPs use Micro-PGA2 form factor CPUs.

After I replaced the main board in my T20 with a later model one, I upgraded the CPU from the original 650 to an 850. It made for a nice improvement in speed. Because the board was designed for a 1.6/1.35V CPU I picked the 850 rather than a faster one that requires more voltage.

The original T20 fan/cooler doesn't have the cooling capacity for anything over a 700. I originally used a 04P3448/04P3295 fan from a T21. It worked OK until I was able to get a 26P9317 T22 fan (eBay $4.95 USD).

This site lists part numbers for the T20, T21 & T22 TPs. These were probably the final production part numbers:

I suggest you bight the bullet and get some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. I compared it with standard RadioShack white silicone/zinc oxide goop and it made a major difference in temperature as measured by MobileMeter. Now the upper left hand portion of my keyboard runs cooler than with the original PIII M 650 CPU.

Also, the later model fans require a "Z" bracket to clamp the fan to the board. These look like they also help in shielding the keyboard. They may be hard to find if you need to get one of them.

Good luck...
Chas.

Hvasta, WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN????

Did you get the wedding pictures??? Email me, James is taking a right seat for AirNET, but is still looking at some regionals.

Chas., as usual, has given you good info and there's very little I can add to it other than some additional model specific info.

T23 max. CPU - PIII-M 1.33GHz.

http://support.intel.com/support/proces ... 007508.htm

T30 max. CPU - PIV-M 2.6GHz. (Good luck finding one for a reasonable amount!)

http://processorfinder.intel.com/script ... rocFam=826

BTW, max. RAM on the T30 and A31 families is TWO GB, not the one IBM stipulates in the TAWBOOK.PDF.

James

Chas,

Yeah, James is right, you got great stuff! Thanks for the link to the cpu info sheet! I'll pick up some Arctic Silver andsee if that helps the cooling. I get a little nervous when the temp heads over 90C! I swapped the -20 fan for a -21/-22 fan with the bigger heat pipe, it's cooler, only abt 5C , but anything cooler is good. I didnt get the Z bracket tho, so I'll have to seach if it. I may end up going with a -21/-22 mobo swap for the newer architecture too.

Thanks again for the info!
